Vote on Tuesday September 16th
I’m ready to be your full-time state representative in the 10th Suffolk District and I’m asking for your vote in the Sept. 16 primary race against Rep. Mike Rush.
I proposed holding two public debates with Mr. Rush because I feel that the voting public should be able to compare and contrast our differences on the issues. Mr. Rush wouldn’t commit - and then made excuses, saying my campaign called the wrong number and that we didn’t have a format for the debates. That’s just not true and, at best, a distortion of the truth. My campaign coordinator spoke to and e-mailed Mr. Rush’s campaign manager several times regarding the debates. We even have the staff member’s cell phone number. But we never got a straight answer.
So I’d like to set the record straight. Here’s why I want your vote:
1) I support the full Democratic Party platform, including women’s right to choose, equal marriage rights, providing funding for all college students including undocumented immigrants, and closing corporate tax loopholes. I will never support or file discriminatory legislation.
Mr. Rush, on the other hand, is against progressive change. A Democrat in name only, he is anti-choice as well as anti-civil union and same-sex marriage. His views discriminate against women and gays and lesbians, as well as immigrants. He voted against the repeal of the 1913 law that prevented out-of-state gay and lesbian couples from marrying in Massachusetts. He also voted against a law that, by giving
undocumented immigrants in-state college tuition rights, would have brought an economic boon to the state.
2) Mr. Rush has the second-worst voting record in the Legislature, missing 43 roll call votes last legislative session. During my Listening Tour this summer of West Roxbury, Brookline and Roslindale, I was told by many constituents that he doesn’t return their phone calls. Although he receives a full-time salary of nearly $60,000 as state representative, he also attends law school part time and is a member of the Naval Reserves. When does he have time to be a full-time representative?
I’ll be your full-time rep. and the salary I earn - and paid for by your tax dollars - will be just that, not a stipend to help with my education.
3) I have proposed solutions to the home heating oil and gas crisis (see Issues). Mr. Rush has no plan. I also completed the WBZtv.com Voter Guide survey, which addresses more issues that voters are concerned about. Mr Rush chose not to participate.
4) Mr. Rush is a co-sponsor of civic commission study but I am actually doing the work, not just talking about it. I am working on instituting integrated civic curriculum at the community college and high school levels with members of the education community like former school committee member Ruth Kaplan and Mass Bay Community College President Carole Berotte Joseph. I am also working with student leaders to get the On Campus Student Voter bill passed - a bill that I co-sponsored with college students and Senator Cynthia Creem. Representatives Smizik and Sanchez testified at a state hearing in favor of the bill, but Mr. Rush did not.
5) I am working with members of the community to establish a Community Liaison 10th Suffolk District Board so that residents have a voice in what happens in their community at the state level. Mr. Rush has no such board or connection to his constituents.
This campaign is not about me, it is about us. Participate as a community liaison. Let’s identify problems, share ideas and solutions, and establish an effective communications network with the governor’s office, Mayor Menino’s office and our federal legislators.
I humbly ask for your vote on Tuesday, September 16th.
Thank you,
Pamela
