For the Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown.

Are those Deluxe Town Diner ads original?

The Deluxe Town might be my favorite breakfast place in Greater Boston. But those cars remind me an awful lot of the illustrations for a feature I recall seeing in National Lampoon magazine many, many years ago. I wonder if they're just similar, "inspired by", or a naked ripoff.

Bruce McCall

Yeah, he specializes in that sort of thing (talk he gave on the topic). But he's hardly the only person to have thought of stuff like that.

My memory serves me well, if only occasionally

It turns out Bruce McCall did indeed work as an illustrator for National Lampoon back in the day. Can't believe I remembered that, as I probably saw that NatLamp "concept cars of the 1940s or 1950s" piece with very similar illustrations to the Deluxe Town Diner ads only once when I was about 12: the issue itself is probably from the mid-to-late 1970s.
