DA: Fatal Turnpike crash caused by drunken wrong-way driver

Phillip Daniels, 33, is due for arraignment Monday morning in Boston Municipal Court on charges of motor-vehicle homicide and operating under the influence causing bodily injury, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says.

According to the DA's office, it looks like Daniels drove west on the eastbound side of the turnpike, striking another car near the Prudential tunnel around 2 a.m., killing the passenger and sending the driver to Mass. General in critical condition.

Innocent, etc.

Very interesting. Could one

Very interesting. Could one argue some sort of (perverse) intent in this case, given the circumstances? Unless you pull a U-turn on the inbound portion of the Pike, this is almost impossible to pull off, involving driving the wrong way down city streets, and then finding an unmarked ramp to the Pike...

My first thought was that I

My first thought was that I don't think I could get on the pike going the wrong way if I tried! Unless you went through one of the switch-hitting center toll booths the wrong way?
And if you did that, wouldn't one of the attendants see it? Yikes.

I suppose pulling a U once you were on would be the simplest way- yikes!

Unfortunately, a simple affair

Actually, if he was at Lucky's (across Fort Point Channel), he just has to head east on Congress, and then get on the Pike the wrong way at B Street.

So I'll withdraw the premise of my original post - I was originally envisioning driving the wrong way on Stuart Street for at least a couple of blocks, then hitting one of those corkscrew ramps at the Copley Square exit.

Yep, Congress St

Per the Herald, the drunken bastard murderer

got onto the Pike from Congress Street headed westbound in an eastbound lane.

Will Lucky's will be charged for continuing to serve alcohol to someone who was that staggeringly drunk (.23)?

Confusing

If you wanted to go east on the westbound side, I could see you banging a u-ey at any of the on ramps in the middle of downtown, but to go west on the eastbound side from a ramp, I think you'd have to do it from somewhere around the SE Expressway, because there are no other entrance ramps onto the east Pike past the Allston Brighton tolls.

The only thing I can think of would be to go west on the Pike to the AB Tolls, accidentally use the cab turnaround to get headed east again...realize you didn't mean to take that lane and then spin around to try and get back to the AB tolls.
