How newsboys asked for tips back in the day

J.L. Bell reprints a poetic plea for tips from deliverers of the Censor, a loyalist newspaper, in 1772, including:

May Government her Laws defend,
And foul Misrule to Hell descend;
A happy Year may all enjoy,
And may your FAVOURS bless your Boy.

In the 1860s, newsboys were licensed, and had to attend newsboy school for 2 hours per day. Truant officers checked to see if they had their badges to prove they were licensed and attended school. By the early 1900s, there was a Boston Newsboy's Court, which replaced Juvenile court for them and could be used to charge them with truancy, short-changing, selling on streetcars, smoking or gambling.
