Masshole F1: Herb Chambers

So, the Boston Globe videotaped Herb Chambers in his McLaren F1 breaking the speed limit, (probably) illegally using his dealership plates, and talking on the cell phone while driving.

I wonder what the State Police would think of Mr. Chambers tearassing around on the state's highways in his "$4M" sportscar, on dealer plates? (something tells me the F1 isn't for sale.) I wonder what his insurance company thinks of him taking along passengers on a joyride?

And lastly: if the car isn't registered...that means he's getting out of excise tax on more than half a million dollars worth of car.

Very Cool

the car - not Herb tooling around town.

Have to say - didn't see anything aggregious that the rest of us don't do in our $4k "sportscars" - and he does use the car for his business (as an attraction) so it might be legal to use the dealer plates. The car may be titled to the business. If you offered him $8 REALLY large - I'd bet he'd take it (and go buy two more F1's).

He'd probably also take $8 REALLY large for his single family home he's still trying to sell on Comm Ave which comes with a garage with a solid copper door to house your F1 and a heated driveway to melt the snow - although I did have to help push his Maybach over an ice dam a few years ago - damn - and he didn't even offer me a ride in the F1-not that I saw that car in the garage! Now THAT's being a Masshole!

bigger reasons why I will never buy a car from that shmuck

Big time James Severino sponsor. I'll buy my Mini Cooper out of state, thank you very much.

Or you could buy it from MINI

Or you could buy it from MINI of Peabody.

mini coopers

I was told he was the only Mini game in town. Now I forget who said that. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. It was probably Herb Chambers.

Peabody it will be!

Here's another reason...

"I'll give you $200 over invoice."

"Did I show you the GPS?"

"I'll give you $200 over invoice."

"Did I mention our special on undercoating?"

"I'll give you $200 over invoice."

"Have I shown you the moon roof?"

What?

Is he 'probably' speeding because he has a ludicrously expensive car? I'm glad to see you're broadening your horizons from bashing the BFD to the rich as well.

did you watch the video?

Like, the part where he jumps on 128 and pops over into the left lane while going through at least two gears, accelerating so hard that when he lifts for the shift, the cameraman can't keep the camera level?

This isn't a Camry. It's a 650HP car that weighs next to nothing- and goes from "legal" to "you're going to jail" in no time flat.

This is a joke, right?

This is a joke, right? Probably speeding. I just drove down to Attleboro on I-95, and when I caught myself doing 80 and slowed down to70 , all three lanes of traffic sped off in front of me doing 80.

What are you, the traffic nazi? Why don't you create your own blog and spew your bile into the echo chamber?

I think you're off base here.

He didn't talk on the phone; he said he'd call the person back. Seems appropriate.

He used his dealer plates to take a reporter on a promotional trip. Herb Chambers is a brand and the business of the brand is car sales. It was advertising, using a dealer plate. I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that's within the law.

I take your point about the excise tax, though. He has quite a car collection. I wonder how many of them pay any tax to the cities and towns where he lives?

The video was cut between

The video was cut between when he's talking on the phone, and when he says "let me call you in 10-15."

I agree with some of the

I agree with some of the sentiments already echoed above. Nothing in that video is more egregious than anything I do from time to time when tooling around in one of my cars. Anecdotally, I have heard from more than one person in his employ that have nothing but good things to say about him as a boss/employer. He doesn't bother me like Ernie Boch, Jr. does. *That* is a guy whose dealerships I will never spend a dime in.
