Fire at Roslindale Square restaurant goes to one alarm

The Boston Fire Department tweets a one-alarm fire broke out shortly before 11 p.m. in the rear of Delfino's, at 754 South St.

The department says the stove fire only did about $10,000 in damage, but filled the restaurant with smoke. One firefighter was sent to the hospital for evaluation of a possible injury.

Delfino's was one of the first restaurants to move into Roslindale Square during its revival in the mid-1990s.

I don't think the map and the description are matching up. Delfino's is in Rozzie Square.

Hat's off to the post office. That anyone who lives on South St gets their mail, I have no idea how. The street is of byzantine complexity.

It's actually amazing it came as close as it did, given I gave the address as

754 South St., Delfino's, MA

of "a street." I have given directions to exasperated seekers looking for the UMass Bio Lab down by the commuter rail station more than once. "See those railroad tracks? Imagine the street goes right through them... and then it hooks left on Washington... but, no, you can't drive that way... Okay, forget it. Imagine that the South Street you're looking for is an entirely different South Street. You have to go up Walter and over on Bussey to get there."

South st is one of the oldest in the Rosi area. It was there before Washington st, so when Washington was laid out - as the Dedham Turnpike - south st was probably taken over for a stretch. They probably should have just renamed the section beyone Rosi sq.

Is Metropolitan Avenue at the train tracks.

What's with the duplication of Metropolitan Avenue -- on both sides of the tracks?

They used to connect, back when that whole area was part of Hyde Park (does Metropolitan really swoop around like that in what's now Roslindale? I thought Dale went all the way to the tracks).

...run all the way to the tracks. and also pretty sure that the street paralleling the tracks on the east side (rather than the one angling away from the tracks) is also not called Metropolitan Avenue. (I know Metroploitan Avenue was continuous down to Neponset or thereabouts -- but don't think there was ever two Metropolitan Avenues on EACH side of the tracks).

For those familiar with the model train club next to Delfino's, I've been a member for over 10 years - the first time I tried to find it I drove around for an hour unable to figure out wher this place is - as I recall the street ends around Roslindale Village T Stop and restarts on the other side - and the numbering is wacky. The model train club has a mailing address of 760 South Street - our address at the assessing dept is 4 Birch Street (one of our tenants).

Reminds me of Japan where the guide books tell you there are only two ways to find an address - a map with detailed pictures or work for the post office. Apparently the addresses are not in order of where the building is on the street, but often correlates to when the building was constructed.

Anyway - I called to find out info on the fire and the tenants in the apartments upstairs were evacuated and are all fine and the trains are still there.

Glad to hear both the trains and restaurant survived. I'm a big fan of both. Did you work the open house on Sunday? Who knows, we might have spoken to each other.
