All quiet at Revere Beach today

Kid at Revere Beach

At least by the bandstand for the two hours I was there this afternoon. Yeah, reporting's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it; in this case, spending two hours on a beautiful day watching the water and bracing for all sorts of horrible trouble that never came when Boston high-school kids arrived for an annual skip day.

Maybe it had something to do with the state troopers and the K-9 unit stationed right across from the main exit of the Revere Beach T stop, or the knots of troopers strategically placed along the sidewalk by the beach, or the State Police helicopter that began flying slowly up and down the beach around 3 p.m. Or, where I was, the four plainclothes police officers just sitting there. Or maybe, just maybe, most Boston high-school kids are basically good kids who just wanted to enjoy a beautiful day at the beach.

But being Pasty-American and without sunscreen, I would have fried (yeah, could've taken the T from Revere Beach, but somehow that just seemed wrong on a day like today).

There were loads of kids at Castle Island today, with a similar show of force by the state police. There was some sort of pd activity when we first got there around noon, but I didn't bother to find out what it was.

That unlike last year I still have all my plants in my front yard. That nothing NOTHING in my neighborhood smells like pee. Not a single mail box got knocked over. The tiny convenience store at the end of my street did not have to deal with a rash of petty theft.

All in all as far as I am concerned today was a perfect day. We don't dislike the students from Boston, or the visitors from out west. As long as we the residents of Revere Beach, are respected.

They should start here.

Why is the state and town spending thousands in overtime for policing something that never happened?

There's no reason for this crap besides a waste of money and showboating politics.

I'd gladly commit my tax dollars to this type of deterrence. The alternative is what happened last year, when a tiny percentage of people decided to be thugs and put the lives of good kids and neighbors alike at risk. Last year, this event caught everyone off guard, and unfortunately, in addition to the annoying property crime and theft, several kids were seriously injured. No news is good news. Bravo, State Police, Revere Police, BPD, Transit, probation dept, and whoever else contributed to this slow news day...

More power to them! I'm a 40 year old engineer who skipped school only two days in my life. Everyone needs a break once in awhile! It's only ONE day. I can't believe they sent helicopters in to check on the high school kids! That's nuts!

Please share your address with me. Next nice day I want to send all the kids to hang out in front of your house. I have to put up with a tiny bit of annoying behavior every year, it is the price I pay for living near the beach.

Still that does not give anyone one, no matter what their age the right to trash my neighborhood just because it's a nice day.
