I just happened on the scene

I just happened on the scene walking to Cambridge. Massive fire and police response. Six ladders against the building. Sixth- and seventh- floor windows smashed open. Stretchers on scene.

Both Mass Ave and Beacon St are closed in both directions.

I was biking along the Esplanade, a block from this address, around 3 pm -- and somehow did not notice any fire or smoke.

Apparently the fire started before 2. By 2:45 there were still many ladders against the building and firefighters were hosing down the exterior.

Most people know this building as the Cambridge-- it was the Hotel Cambridge when built.

Here is the radio traffic from this fire. It's a little long, but you can hear firemen making rescues etc. Good work done by all.

Building is still boarded up as of September 2010. No work or repairs being done on the building. Anyone know why the building is languishing?
