Boston doesn't run on Dunkin's

All outAll out

There's no sadder sight for a Dunk's coffee drinker: Empty pots. Seen at the Dunkin' Donuts on Hyde Park Avenue in Hyde Park this afternoon.

When I walked by the Davis Square DD this afternoon, it was closed with the lights off. This never happens.

Diesel Cafe and Starbucks were open, but not serving any form of coffee, hot or cold.

Youd think a coffee shop has the equipment necessary to boil water.

The problem is that basically all of these places use automated systems and the water comes in from behind the machine. There's no chance to intercept it and boil it before it hits the coffee and the staff are not trained in any way to change the system in any meaningful way.

Depending on how soon after the problem began that they stopped serving coffee, they probably have to run a sterilization solution through all of their plumbing just to clean out all of the machines before they start making coffee again just to be safe. The corporate heads can't take a chance that they'd serve a tasty bacterial coffee once this is over.
