City vows to crack down on long-term parkers in Roslindale Square

BTD's been out in force recently in the municipal lot on Taft Hill Road, placing parking-ticket-like warnings that the city will soon begin ticketing cars - at $25 a pop - found in the lot for more than two hours.

The warnings specifically cite the harm long-term parkers are doing to local businesses in tough economic times like these.

Are people parking in that lot all day while they take the commuter rail into Boston? I've noticed that plenty of people get on the train at that stop early in the day, but for some reason even as noon rolls around the commuter rail lot seems mostly empty.

Yeah, I've been trying to figure out what the deal is with that. I'm pretty sure the lot started to be unfilled when the parking rate was increased by 125%. I assumed people were either walking further, taking a bus to the train, or parking on side streets such as mine, which definitely has quite a few day time only parkers. Maybe they are using the Taft Hill lot, too, in which case, they are not only harming local business, but also other 'T riders.

Yeah, $4 for commuter rail parking is a bit much for a neighborhood of that density. Wasn't it $1 just a few years ago?

Isn't the MBTA user fees part of the whole "we can't help ourselves"
spending of the MBTA combined with a lot of "no new taxes" talk?
As I recall 1% of the 6.25% sales tax is to cover the MBTA, although
the debt service is probably way beyond that. Hence big increases in
parking fees.

If one goes to a restaurant -- and shopping -- one could exceed 2 hours -- and yet be using the lot appropriately.

I think the two-hour limit is only during the day, when it probably makes more sense. In practical terms, I've never had a problem finding a space in the Square in the evening (or even during the day, for that matter, like lunchtime today).
