Coming soon to a Boston neighborhood near you: Michael Flaherty
In a New Year's message to supporters, Michael Flaherty says he's not just going to fade away or move to the suburbs or something:
... With these new friendships and partnerships, we challenged the status quo and advocated for a better, stronger Boston that works for all residents. I continue to be inspired by our collective advocacy. That is why I plan to continue to stay active both in my neighborhood and every neighborhood in our city. Together we can continue the call for more successful charter schools, a greater emphasis on youth crime prevention, and improved city services that hold City Hall accountable. ...
Complete message:
With these new friendships and partnerships, we challenged the status quo and advocated for a better, stronger Boston that works for all residents. I continue to be inspired by our collective advocacy. That is why I plan to continue to stay active both in my neighborhood and every neighborhood in our city. Together we can continue the call for more successful charter schools, a greater emphasis on youth crime prevention, and improved city services that hold City Hall accountable.
While the 2009 race may be over, our work has only begun. I plan on reaching out to all of you, asking for your help and working with you to continue fighting for the issues we all care so much about.
Let's make 2010 a year for positive and meaningful results. Thank you for your friendship and for all you do to make Boston a place we can proudly call home.
Happy Holidays and best wishes for a new year!
- Michael F. Flaherty

That's the problem
Yeah, that's the problem. Once people have a taste of politics they can't ever seem to give it up ...
The next time.....
.....he comes to my neighborhood meeting will be the first time. City Councilor for a decade and never left Southie until he ran for Mayor. Prices for real estate in Duxbury must be too high right now......soon enough.
He represented Southie for
He represented Southie for the council, right? Not saying he shouldn't be knowledgeable about the rest of the city, but you don't expect the senator from Iowa to visit the people in Massachusetts and go to meetings just because he's voting on things that impact the entire country. Similarly, his job was to represent Southie on the council, not go to meetings in other districts.
No, he didn't represent Southie
He lives in Southie, but he was an at-large city councilor, which means he was supposed to represent everybody. Southie's district councilor is Bill Linehan (and before him, Jimmy Kelly).
bleh, I knew that at some
bleh, I knew that at some point, that's what I get for moving into the city between 2007 and 2009, can't remember anything about elections I didn't vote in :(
Yeah, that must be why Back
Yeah, that must be why Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Fenway, Dorchester (Ward 16) and most of JP voted for Flaherty over Menino... He must not show up in those neighborhoods either.
I worked for Councilor
I worked for Councilor Flaherty 2005-2007 and will tell you that he did make an effort to traverse the entire city before running for Mayor. Maybe not to the degree as everyone would like but there are community meetings almost every night across the city. It is hard for a district Councilor to cover them all even with a staff of 3 or 4, never-mind city-wide with the same size staff. It usually happens through meeting minutes and through personal relationships with other Councilors, staffs, and advocate groups and volunteers. . .The only elected official that has the infrastructure to do this well is the Mayor's office who has his own version of the Council as the Office of Neighborhood Services.
Politics is not easy. People want you to be all things to everybody. We critique their every move if there not doing enough, when they try to do more, we say it's too late. . .
