One of the photos is of New York City, not Boston. It may look like Downtown Crossing but the street sign says W 47th Street and there are NY Ads on the left, and a closer look reveals its definitely not Downtown Crossing. Who are these monsters?

It says the contest was for UMass Boston students taking urban photos, not necessarily of Boston itself. It definitely does include at least one very nice pic of Boston

Wow -- the winning picture is really the least compelling of them all, at least for its subject, and most of the others have stronger composition as well. The rest are quite beautiful.

I think the winning picture is excellent.

I do think the photo by Justin Smith is better.

Disclaimer, I did enter said contest.

I think the winning photos are beautiful for what they are but I'm not sure they relate to the mission statement (posted under the photos). Aside from the head sculpture shot they are devoid of human connections, wheres the culture and community, the engine of ideas etc? It looks to me like they just tossed the mission statement aside and picked arty photos.

Contest Information
Mission: At the September 14, 2009 convocation, Chancellor Keith Motley described the Urban Mission of UMass Boston. As he stated,

“Urban is much, much more than population density, deteriorating conditions, and social pathology. Urban is where the power and culture of a community come together. Cities are where the goods of civilization are multiplied. Urban areas are the generators of hopes and dreams. They are the engines for stimulating intellectual capital, the magnets for thinkers and innovators, and the laboratories of new ideas...”

The psychology department celebrates this urban mission with an annual photography contest—featuring photos that capture the vision expressed in Chancellor Motley’s speech.
