The deal with the Nantucket Rapist Island guy outside the State House

He's a former Nantucket resident now living in Northampton out of, he says, fear for his life. The Hampshire Gazette explains. People who live on the island don't much cotton to him:

... I only hope that people in Northampton are smart enough to see through his charade, and keep their children far away from his influence. ...

If he's mad about the guy in the limerick, someone should tell him that's not real.

This blog post asserts that Nantucket Islanders "don't much cotton to" the guy holding the Nantucket Rapist Island sign outside The State House. The quote shown above to support that assertion is unsourced. It is actually from Island Blogger, a page that on its face blatantly reflects the "don't scare the tourists" motive.

I stopped to chat with one person standing near and with the "Nantucket Rapist Island" (thus my Google research tonight) sign today, which gave me a great excuse to take a break during my daily run, especially after running up Beacon Hill! What I heard amongst the chatter were claims that women are being "drugged and raped." That girls are "targeted in bars," and "bartenders are complicit." That "all the cops are cocaine corrupt."

Nope, never would image such a possibility on an island with drug and crime problems increasing and a whole host of shortstay tourists and transient workers. As far as I can tell from my straight friends, Nantucket has gone from being a sandy spot to seek peace to one where people party like they do in city bars -- and seek sex and drugs similarly. People get smashed up. This environment, when majority tourist, creates an amazing possibility for problems that include Rufinal/Roofies. In the morning, she is so hung over, and he has fled? Just one scenario? In some cases, maybe stories of drinking and partying make it easy to doubt charges of rape? Not an easy field from which to get women to come forward and tell their story. And do police file all these calls/reports as rape reports?

He is gone back to New Jersey or California? She claims rape during a wild, drunken bender? Bartenders say she was smashed?

The act of discrediting this protester so readily is chilling. All I can say is that these are serious charges he makes. But to ignore and minimize this guy because he had "problems with police" (to which I can only find reference to a "threat," which could mean a million things) could be a great sin of omission. If there is a problem similar to the hypotheticals above, then I hope his presence at The State House sheds light on it.

Never judge a book by its cover or a message by its messenger. This guy might be talking the straight dope. I'm pretty well educated, run my own successful business, and am no stranger to the wild side of life. In other words, I'm smart but wild. What he says makes more sense than the idea that he is 100% wrong. I would not be surprised if what he says happens with great regularity. Just my guess.

I feel like this guy might be the weird guy who will end up being "right all along."

Thank you for inviting others to be open to these possibilities. I work in substance abuse prevention and I suspect that stalking, sexual assaults and preying on intoxicated individuals occurs everywhere and more than anyone cares to admit
I do know that some of the larger operators who sell alcohol on Nantucket care. There is little if any training, awareness or policies & procedures in place to address this.
This gentleman is ahead of the mainstream by protesting this. Alcohol ( in this order) reduces inhibitions, impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and impairs motor coordination. In 7 of 10 sexual assaults on college campuses the victim is under the influence of alcohol.

The "Nantucket Rapist Island" guy, Phil O'Connell, does a great job at discrediting himself. "Nantucket Rapist Island" -- while certainly attention grabbing, isn't very sophisticated, and seems more interested in garnering attention for the sake of attention than it is with promoting it's alleged mission statement of putting a stop to the under-reporting of rapes on Nantucket. I would be less inclined to believe this guy was a nutball if his organization was called "Organization for the prevention of sexual violence against women on Nantucket" or something to that effect, as opposed to "Nantucket Rapist Island" which doesn't really tell you where the organization stands on rape. Is it pro or anti rape? I can't tell from the name.

Just saw the guy outside south station with his HUGE protest placard. You have to wonder why he is so determined to get his message out...on the other hand, why has he not gone to the police as the Gazette article states. Just leaves you wondering...at least it leaves me wondering.

This link may shed some light on his motivation:

I met this guy today outside of rao's coffee in amherst and sat down to talk with him for an hour and a half. He is a great guy and you know what? There is fucked up shit going down on rapist island if people had half the sense and balls to protest with him we could stop what's going on. Seven kids killed themselves in 2 years because of the rape going on. Seven kids! They didn't even get obituaries. That is terrible. Stop nantucket rapist island people do what is right and what needs to be done.

My child was raped at the Cisco Brewers August 4, 2007. I am convinced that this heinous crime was done by a worker at this establishment. The Nantucket Police was apathetic in trying to help us file a report even trying to convince us to not try to file anything! Philip O'Connell has a true and valid voice in this.
