The drinking man's candidate for state treasurer

The drink's on him

Looks like Steve Murphy's got the Hyde Park bar-crowd vote sewn up. If nothing else, Murphy, a Boston city councilor unable to ever get elected to anything else, should do well in his base in Boston's southern tier.

Har. I stopped by not long after we moved from JP to HP, recalling its previous lives as restaurants. Noting the "& Grill" on the sign, I popped in at lunchtime to see what they served and whether it was two or one meals a day.

The barkeep and four Ironweed-style patrons looked incredulously at me when I asked. After a long pause, one of the stool polishers said, "We drink our lunch around here. No food."

why the hatin'?

Murphy's not a bad city councillor. Bars are legitimate businesses.

If you knew Massachusetts political history, you'd know that no Boston city councilor has won a state office since Ed McCormack, I think. This is despite numerous tries by Yancey, Iannella, and others.

No hating this time

Murphy's grown on me as a city councilor. Yes, bars are legitimate businesses. And Hyde Park's a legitimate neighborhood.

All that having been said, I thought the idea of a bar supporting a candidate for state treasurer was funny. And I find Murphy's latest effort to escape the city council, well, not burst-out-laughing funny, but mildly amusing.

did you forget Ray Flynn?

He was on the Boston City Council and a State Rep at the same time.

I meant state-wide office

sorry for not being clearer.

Ray Flynn failed in his bid to be governor. Boston City Councilor, like a lot of offices, is not too bad of a dead-end, though.

There are always the county offices to escape to, like Iannella the Younger and Roache did.
