Feds charge worker at Fenway halfway house sold heroin to residents

A former employee at the Coolidge House, 307 Huntington Ave., was charged today with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, as part of an alleged scheme to funnel drugs to newly released federal prisoners trying to re-adapt to live on the outside.

Deborah Belim, 43, of Roxbury, faces 20 years in federal prison and a $1 million fine if convicted, the US Attorney's office in Boston reports.

According to the feds, Belim, who was in charge of monitoring resident compliance with parole requirements, such as reporting to work, initially funneled heroin to residents through her new boyfriend, himself a resident of the facility. But even after he left - and began living with her - she continued to sell heroin at Coolidge House, the US Attorney's office says.

Innocent, etc.

That's low. I know someone who lived at Coolidge House 10 years ago. To even get selected for living in the halfway house required commitment to clean living, hard work, good behavior, all that. When you show up, they give you a couple days to land a job or else you're sent back to prison. Once you do land a job, you have to pay rent, stay clean, and return by curfew (no exceptions made for late work schedules, which are often in restaurants...). No matter what conflicts arise with co-residents, you have to keep it civil. Violating the rules can get you sent back to prison.

We're talking about people who are really working toward a different life.

And this woman is accused of exploiting her post and the predilections of the residents for profit at their own peril. Potential success stories offered a titular chance but instead taken advantage of during a time of weakness. If it's true, that's low.

Hear, hear. I currently work in another social service agency that provides services to Coolidge House residents. Crucially, Coolidge House is for inmates who have a history of substance abuse, and are trying to manage the incredibly destabilizing transition out of the prison system without losing their sobriety. This is like selling heroin in a rehab. Low indeed.

Yeah, it is low. Not as low as being emotionally abusive to your spouse and kids, but pretty low. I mean, that ruins lives, too. Even worse than heroin. At least you can quit heroin.

Oh, what is the penalty for ruining your childrens' lives? Fifty years in jail and ten million dollars in fines?

Oh right, the penalty is NOTHING.

These drug laws are fucking ridiculous. Twenty YEARS? For selling a plant??? Are you serious?

I am just utterly disgusted by this. This crap is the apex of hypocrisy.
