Four BPL branches to lose security guards July 1

People of Boston Branches reports the South End and Lower Mills branches will lose all security-guard service effective July 1, while the Fields Corner and Hyde Park branches will be guardless most of the time.

Meanwhile, BPL trustees meet Monday at 3 p.m. to consider the question of whether they would want to keep four doomed branches (Lower Mills, Washington Village in South Boston, Orient Heights and Faneuil in Brighton) open if the city council and library supporters can find the money to support their operations for the coming year. The meeting is in the Orientation Room in the McKim Building at the BPL central library in Copley Square.

Book theft futures very attractive now

What's going to happen now? Is this like the security guy on Seinfeld who tracks down overdue books? I don't think people should lose their jobs, but I do feel it's silly to have redundancy. Is that what we're looking at here or just a lack of funds?

more than book theft

I think the BPL security guards are more like the school police - the libraries are public spaces and sometimes there are fights or other issues. I think protecting the books is secondary.

Yesterday afternoon at Hyde Park

The security guard was the guy who shut the place down - going around and rousing everybody from their torpor (the Menino wing may truly be wonderful, but it needs some better AC) starting about 15 minutes before closing time.

Book thieves are the least of

Book thieves are the least of worries for many urban public library security officers.
