Harvard Avenue McDonald's saved: Licensing board to let it stay open until 2 a.m.

The Boston Licensing Board voted today to let the franchisee of the McDonald's at Harvard and Commonwealth avenues stay open until 2 a.m.

The board overturned its decision five years ago to limit the restaurant to an 11 p.m. closing time after a hearing yesterday at which franchise owner Bob King said he would have to shut the outlet without additional revenue from the extra hours. He also pleaded for fairness because the board had voted last year to let a rival Kelly's open until 2 a.m. in the old Marty's right across the street from his outlet.

The move was opposed by the Allston Civic Association, which does not like bars and restaurants open that late.

Sit and Turn ACA.

You don't love in the burbs, so stop acting like it.

Of course they don't live in the burbs. In the burbs, the local Denny's/IHOP/Bickford's is probably open 24/7 and the McDonalds/Taco Bell/Burger King didn't have to beg to keep the drive-through open until 3 AM (let alone 2 AM).

Very True, even with my spelling error.

Thing about the burbs is through, they can partition off commercial from residential putting it far far away. Out o sign, out of mind. Of course then you town feels like a barren strip mall wasteland, but to each his own.

After all the discussion in yesterdays post, I called the board and told them i support this.

Shall we expect all those expressing faux outrage toward the neighbors to show up 15 min. before the new closing time to raucously celebrate their victory?

(kidding, just kidding)

NICE!

Good. I hope the Kenmore one is next. There's something unamerican about a baseball game ending after the closest mcdonalds has closed for the night. Even worse is that every mcdonalds in suburbanville USA is open 24 hours.

That Kelly's is going to put Mickey D's out of business anyway? And I just saw that Pizzeria Uno closed up on the other corner. I always liked that place. Why can't that Great Scott's place go out of business now? Strange to say that is probably the one bar in the Allston/Brighton area that I've never gone into.

but they're the only option in Allston-Brighton for live music. Not counting cover bands, because I'm not counting karaoke either!

back in the day for bands I never heard of that got to me. And doesn't the place down at the end of Harvard Ave. have live bands still? (O'Briens?)

It's been a while since I've been to O'Briens, pre-facelift. Last time I was at O'Brien's, a fight
broke out, cancelling the final band's set.

Personally speaking, I'd rather pay 10 bucks to hear a band playing original music than 5 bucks to hear a lame John Mayer cover. To each their own!

And back then there were a lot more places that had bands. I just remember Great Scotts being unreasonable with the cover charges.

Live music there, no?

but all they have is trouble-causing gangsta rap, per the bar that formerly lived across the street...

There's also the Paradise Rock Club and Agganis for the bigger acts. You also don't have to leave Allston very far to get to the House of Blues at Fenway either.

The Paradise was always great. But there used to be more places that had live music where you didn't need a ticket or cover charge.

Anything beyond Packard's Corner may as well be Siberia.
