That was not one of the parts of Memorial Drive where I'd expect a mugging.

Why is it OK to identify the attackers as male but not other obvious descriptives? Female attackers would be no more novel than white yuppie attackers.

Not a Harvard student! Nooooooo!! Why couldn't they have punched, kicked and beaten me instead?!

If it's the local thugs, and they start preying on Harvard and MIT students, the local thugs are screwed.

Everyone thinks that the thugs live in the subsidized housing, and they only live there because some local politicians and paid activists are allowed to go wild with handout programs, with most Harvard and MIT people oblivious to the extent. The poor often live in nicer buildings than many local scientists and professors do, and they're showered with programs, even including programs to get sweet deals to *own* homes in Cambridge that are out of reach of most non-poor people. And check out the nice new cars parked overnight in that one newish project near MIT, in front of the townhouses tastefully scattered across the landscaped grounds. If people at the universities get scared or pissed off and start paying attention to local politics, the party is over for the thugs and those who make their livelihoods by throwing barrels of taxpayer money at the poor (thug and non-thug alike).

I'm not saying it's good to be poor. It sucks. And most of the poor are not thugs. But the Cambridge social programs can be crazy generous and just plain crazy, and the thugs are dumbpoops if they poop where they eat.

Racist much?

Where did you see race there? It's about socioeconomic status. Do you instead believe that it's the well-to-do doing most of the muggings? Do you disagree that any likely backlash would be against those receiving public assistance or the public assistance itself?

Hey Anon, this site is filled with Liberals who seem to think that every action/comment is based on some sort of bias against someone's race. It almost blinds them to facts. If a minority commits a crime and gets caught, these liberals think that either the cops were racists or, it is the fault of society that this minority committed the crime. The response to your comment is case in point. You didn't mention race but some liberal thinks you were thinking about someone's race instead of their socioeconomic background.

It's not exactly a secret that "thug" has become the Internet-acceptable synonym for another word that even Herald commenters know they're not supposed to use anymore.

It has a traditional meaning on UH, to mean violent criminal like one who does muggings, and nothing about race.

I don't know what "thug" means at the Herald, and we're not at the Herald.

Basically, to mean somebody who's outgrown being a punk, such as the white guy who smacked that black T inspector.

But in the context of the original long comment about Cambridge public housing? Might have a different connotation.

In Cambridge, that can mean any number of things. Years ago, a student was attacked by local thugs and murdered, and those "local thugs" were little white brats who confused "being a man" with beating people up.

Although it does sound like our commenter has never heard of the trend for federal subsidy for mixed income housing when "projects" are rebuilt.

...not what u think it means. I must have missed the memo that said "thug" now means whatever word you're talking about. Like Swirly exemplifies below, a "thug" can mean a person of any race. You were trying to make something out of his comment that wasn't there, so don't start dragging your warped perception of reality into this.

Not what I think it means? That's gay.

But read a comment thread almost anywhere about an athlete getting arrested, or being questioned about something, or maybe just fouling out of a game, and it's pretty clear what "thug" has come to represent in Internet vernacular. And isn't the original definition about a violent cult in India?

Okay then, from now on we will use "thug" for any athlete who gets arrested or gets kicked out of a game. Are there any other words that we are re-defining today? I'll come here from now on instead of using Webster's dictionary. Thanks for all the help.

I never had the opportunity to live in public housing, but sec 8 housing has to meet certain criteria that exceeds otherwise rentalble unit. I rent to sec 8 tenants so from experience I can tell you that I had to go through significant upgrades before the subsidized tenants could move in...I don't know how it is in cambridge, but some of the newer subsidized developments in Boston are built to very high standards that often exceed the quality of the private neighboring properties, but it is still far from luxurious.
