Her year of baking deliciously

Megan, who normally works in editing, spent a year as a baker at Flour in Fort Point Channel. She dishes on what she will and won't miss (caution: With photos, so not safe if you're hungry):

I will miss making hundreds and hundreds of sticky buns. I don't know why, but sticky buns make people happy. And I like that.

I have had sandwiches at the Fort Point Flour, but I had never been to the one on Tremont though it is just a short hike from work. Then I saw the Bobby Flay Throwdown episode with the sticky buns. I am a chocolate person, but I had to have one of those. A couple of mornings later, I parked in the rain down the street and waited half an hour for the shop to open. I took my bun to work and ate it for breakfast. I have to say that it was a major disappointment. It smelled burnt and tasted like overcooked polymer. I couldn't get the bad taste out of my gullet all morning. Maybe it was just a bad batch.

Plus, for all the nice pictures of chocolate items in the linked blog, there was a distinct lack of chocolate options the morning I went.

Seriously, at the risk of indulging my softer side, a very pure, nicely crafted ode to the rewards of taking a chance. Surely a more pleasant read than some other blog posts I've read. Nice to read something simple and sweet in the morning.

Hi Lanny,

Your comment makes me so sad. First, there's no Flour on Tremont St., so I think you're referring to the one on Washington Street. That's where I first started, and I cannot imagine that you had a burnt sticky bun. We would never put something like that out. I'm so sorry if that was truly your experience.

As far as chocolate items, we always have chocolate brioche available in the morning, but the cakes and things that I have pictures of are finished off a little later because we don't consider them our morning pastries. It's nice to have a variety of things available throughout the day. Had you come back later, you would have found plenty of chocolate items for your enjoyment.

My post was not meant to be a review of Flour but rather a recap of my experience there. I never expected a comment like this, and I do hope that in spite of your own thoughts about Flour that you enjoyed reading my post and learning about what I did there.

Hope you'll give Flour another chance!
