Man with no fingerprints but a rather large package arrested on drug charges in Arboretum

OrtizA man who mutilated his fingertips in a possible attempt to make his identification more difficult was arrested at South and Bussey streets in Roslindale on Tuesday after police found him with more than three-quarters of a pound of heroin stuffed in his pants, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The man, believed to be Jorge Falcon Ortiz, 28, is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail on a charge of trafficking in more than 200 grams of heroin - 361, to be exact. If convicted, he'll be sent away for a mandatory 15-year term.

The DA's office says Ortiz was arrested by Boston Police, acting on a request from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement:

The officers pulled the car over and directed Ortiz to step out. When they did, they noticed a large bulge in his pants. Asked by the officers what the bulge was, Ortiz allegedly stated that it was "drugs."

Fingertip mutilation is an old trick among Suffolk County drug dealers. In 2008, a Revere man allegedly tried the same trick - only to be identified by his face via the Registry of Motor Vehicles drivers-license database. In this case, the DA's office says:

Efforts to check Ortiz’s criminal record and background were unsuccessful because his fingerprints had been mutilated. Authorities are attempting to use other means to identify him conclusively.

Innocent, etc.

I believe they have been doing that for a while and the FBI stores those palm and side thumb prints.

...because you can mutilate them all you like, they grow back pretty fast; less than 30 days. I imagine his ass is going to be in jail longer than that.

A colleague of mine had to get fingerprinted for a job, but apparently doesn't have fingerprints, and they couldn't get any sort of impression even after sending her to all different law enforcement people. I think I'll call and ask her if she's been going around wearing a fat dude mask and stuffing drugs in her pants.
