Man arrested for three Brighton convenience-store holdups

Boston Police today arrested a Brighton man on charges he held up the same convenience store twice last month and was involved in planning a third robbery this month.

Miguel Vargas, 24, of Faneuil Street, was arrested at his home around 5:30 this morning, police said. Police report the SWAT unit went in to arrest Vargas and that, in the course of searching for him, had to shoot a lunging pit bull. Police add that as officers closed in, Vargas threw a gun out his bedroom window. The dog was not injured and safely removed, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says.

He was due for arraignment today in Brighton District Court on charges he held up the Quality Market, 130 N. Beacon St. at gunpoint on Dec. 9 and Dec. 28 and helped plan what turned out to be a botched holdup of a Tedeschi store on Jan. 8. Henry Nelson, 18, was charged with that attemped holdup, which failed when the clerk refused to believe Nelson's gun was real and Nelson allegedly chickened out.

Police say Vargas grew emboldened after the first Quality Market holdup. When he returned on Dec. 28, he not only showed the store clerk a gun, he used it to beat the man before leaving.

Innocent, etc.

Ummm- could someone tell me why a SWAT team was necessary here? How about waiting for this guy to emerge from his home or apartment (and I will bet dollars to donuts he lived with his mother and other family members) and then nabbing him in the first few steps he takes out his front door? Kill the "lunching pit bull"? Oh ok- right. How many dogs do the police kill now? It seems to happen on EVERY occasion they break down a door. Is it policy to just kill the family dog now? Why would you endanger officers in a cramped space like a house- and not to mention any other people who might be in there and guilty of nothing?

This military nonsense on the part of the cops is getting out of control. Is this a case of giving a do nothing SWAT team something to do?

past history has shown that innocent people and officers end up dead more when they "wait" for the guy to come out. Plus once you have that warrant, you have to execute it a certain way, and you only have a limited amount of time to serve it.

More often than not guys like this do get arrested when they get off work or something like that. But sometimes you can't wait that long.

I would have a hard time referring to a lunging pitbull, living in the projects, as a "family dog".

People in the projects don't feel the same attachment to their pets that people outside of the projects do?

As I said in the other thread, what kind of a dog is a threat when it runs into the bathroom cowering as a shot is fired?

Not a dangerous pitbull. If it was dangerous that wouldn't stop it one bit.

The police saw a dog, and shot at it immediately. After all, a dog rounding the corner and wagging it's tail could be a threat.

I forgot. I heard the dog had a tennis ball in his mouth and just wanted the cops to throw it for him. Then the cops just shot him for fun. Animals.

Adam, did you really feel this was worth pushing out of the comment queue?

I mean, sometimes people like Lokita here need to be saved from themselves.

Sure, it's cruder than your typical UH comment, but it reflects as legitimate a viewpoint as any other.

And, no, I'm not taking the photo down.

I could do without the attack language, but I like to hear all sides of stuff that's going down in the city. Leave it up!
