Mobilizing Universal Hub
By adamg - 1/23/10 - 1:05 am
I've turned on a service that supposedly makes the site more friendly on mobile phones. If you're reading this on a phone, could you let me know how it looks? I'm a cellular troglodyte (can you imagine - my phone's camera doesn't even have a flash!), so I'm not the best judge.

nice upgrade...
one suggestion... make an iphone friendly icon.
good job
Login?
Great stuff, please keep it. But how do I log in?
Those tags take up a lot of space.
There's no logo.
Looks good, but needs a couple things...
At the top, it says "click here to insert logo" -- so it looks like you're missing the uhub logo.
The line breaks between each tag cause a pretty high stack of tags, which legthens the page quite a bit. It might be better if there were just spaces between each, rather than a line break.
There are some random lines after the French toast alert.
I always like it when there is an option on mobile sites to view the regular, full site, so it would be cool if you could add that.
I'm on an iPhone, by the way-- if this comment goes through, then the commenting works!
Also, this is my first comment on UHub-- I really enjoy the site and appreciate all the work you put into it
Looks good, but the logo is missing
It still says "click here to change the logo."
I'll check back later when you've made that change.

UH unsafe?
The paranoid in me says that you guys are getting messed with due to the Kenneth Howe story.
I get this returned when using IE this morning, Firefox is OK.

One more thing...
One more thing to add to my earlier comment, the subject of each comment shows up twice.
I do like the mobile interface quite a bit though.
Good stuff
Adam: Looks good on my BlackBerry. But yeah, what bostonzest said about the logo.

couple of things...
so i'm looking at this on my iphone, and it definitely loads faster, etc. but there doesn't seem to be any way to log in? in addition, and maybe because of this, there is no way to get to the tracker and just look at recent posts, except to type in the long URL. and even then since i can't log in it just gives me the general comment count.
to be honest, the whole thing looks a little flat. i'll need to play around with it a little more to see what i think.
thanks for trying to make UH more awesome, though :)
Looks OK on my iPhone but
Looks OK on my iPhone but like others said the logo is missing.
Here are a couple of screenshots for reference:
Can you get rid of all those dotted lines
right below the french toast alert - it's a small space and this takes up about half the page.
Otherwise looks good on mine and loads fast (Palm Treo)
Will work on that
Thanks. There are two ways to control the interface - through a series of templates on the UH server and through a tool on the service's own Web site. I started with the latter to take out some elements (such as, gasp, ads!). Seemed to work, but left those dotted lines where the elements used to be. Now to see if I can purge on my server.
there appears to be no way to
there appears to be no way to force it to show the normal site, and I really hate looking at mobile versions on my iPhone (which is how I mostly read uhub). can you add a link to the full site at the top (so we don't have to scroll through all posts to get to it)?
Hmm, interesting
I think the way the service works is it detects the browser and if it's on a mobile device, switches to the mobile view. Will see if there's a way to let somebody opt out.
mobile UHub
Not bad, but spoiled by the iPhone.
iPhone app
There's actually some work going on to create an iPhone app-creatin' module for Drupal (the software I use here). I should see where that stands.
don't forget android os! [If
don't forget android os! [If they're working on that too]
Thanks, folks!
This is just what I needed to hear. Now to fix all that stuff.
It is so much easier to read
It is so much easier to read on my Black Berry then it was before, I am going to second a bunch of comments (log in, no logo, weird lines.) Thanks for the update tho, I always found it hard to center the site properly on my phone so I could read it in big enough font without having to scroll back and forth.
Looks great! Thank you!

Looks good on Android. Only
Looks good on Android.
Only things are the logo, and when clicking into comments the double headline post.
I'd also like a way to save a setting or go to the regular page. iPhones and Android can browse real web pages fine, and a truncated version isn't always necessary.
What should the home page look like?
Right now, it's roughly similar to the Web site, in that you see headlines and blurbs (sometimes complete posts). Is that OK, or would you rather see just a list of headlines, so you can click on the stories you really want to see, rather than scrolling through lots of stuff you may not want to?
My phone is just displaying
My phone is just displaying the regular page (Palm Pre). Is there a trick to getting the mobile site?
I guess you and the iPhone user above can't just switch?
I wander if the Pre isn't on the list of the devices the software/service checks for. Will see if I can find out.
Sweet
Awesome Adam. I've been waiting for this site to go mobile.
