Motorist says she'll buy helmet, proper cycling shoes for moron bicyclist she almost creamed

Fibro Witch reports on an incident late last night at the Storrow exit onto Charlesgate:

... Riding after 11:30 pm, no bike light, no helmet, short dress. I bet the dress looks nice on you when you tie up the back. Not so great an idea when they are flapping around your rear tire.

And those flip flops, wrong wrong wrong for riding a bicycle, no matter what time of year it is closed toe lace up shoes are a must!

So there I was, just turning off of Storrow Drive on to Charlesgate west, just beyond Back Street and just blocks from Kenmore Square. Storrow Drive being closed again for some unknown reason. You racing down Beacon Street toward Bay State Road as if the ghosts of student loans past where out for your skin. ...

A nice and constructive gesture that.

On a (perhaps) related note, I rode the Charles path for the first time in years last evening. I can see (but not forgive) how someone would be cycling on Beacon St, even negligently without lights at 11:30p, after riding the path. Despite the fact that the path was not crowded, it seemed that every non-cyclist (and a couple of cyclists!) was moving down the path 2 or 3 abreast, counterflow, or doing something else that can only be characterized as risky for all involved.

Perhaps more discouraging (because people are people and I expect them to do dumb things), was the condition of the path. Jeepers! I did not expect this. The pavement is marginal, but the the side-of-path obstructions are really going to kill someone. Light stanchions, trunks of trees bowing into the right of way, boards on the deck sections that are sticking out - I feel much, much safer riding on Beacon Street or Comm. Ave. which is where I'll be the next time I'm down there.

Because I can't ride my bike on it. There are just too many obstacles moving at too many different speeds to contend with. Walkers, rollerbladers, skateboarders and other cyclists, all going in each direction. Heck, I won't even walk on it. I have a friend who works for Boston EMS and she says that that path generates a lot of "business" for them.

speaking of obstructions, those black steel pipe loops that Boston installed on many sidewalks for bicycles are deadly. They're painted black so you can't see them at night, and they're at the right height to catch you where it'll really hurt. I can see someone running down a sidewalk colliding with one of those loops and they flying over it into a face-plant on the sidewalk.

You'd think the city would paint them fluorescent yellow or put some visible warning on them, like reflective tape.

would find himself in the situation you described. That being the case, I think the city should consider a darker black for the bike posts. Hitting some of these guys "where it'll really hurt" and imparing their ability to breed would be a public service.
