Never borrow money from Southie residents if you can't pay it back

A federal jury today convicted a South Boston man of being a thug who helped shake down a Back Bay real-estate agent in hock to a South Boston broker.

Patrick Dehertogh, 48, will be sentenced in January, along with David Gefke, the Southie broker who hired him and two other thugs to go after the broker over a $90,000 debt related to a condo renovation at 263 Commonwealth Ave. in the Back Bay. Gefke and the other two boyos pleaded guilty earlier this month.

According to FBI affidavits, Dehertogh, Michael Lee and Brandon Milby repeatedly threatened the Back Bay broker and his family over the course of several days in meeting at his office and at the Four Seasons Hotel, where he lives and where he parks his Bentley.

"I don't want to interrupt your life at the Four Seasons or your daughter at Boston College," Lee told the broker, identified only as "John Doe," at their first meeting. "If I need to find your Bentley, I will. I want $10,000 now and I want another $10,000 later." He demanded Doe give him the watch he was wearing - and hand over the rest of his watch collection, which he did a couple days later at a Charles Street Starbucks.

Unfortunately for Lee and his boys, Doe had contacted police, and a plainclothes detective was stationed nearby and heard the whole thing. The FBI said Doe contacted police in part because he was scared that the thugs knew so much about him - Gefke allegedly told him he had a source in the State Police digging up info.

The Globe wrote about this earlier this year including information on the identity of John Doe.

Wow. That affadavit reads like a sequel to The Departed. Money lent from Boca Raton, extortion right inside The Four Seasons lounge, and Irish leg breakers being driven around by Southie thugs? Just... wow. And the last line of Footnote 1 added interesting color that I was not aware of about Mr Doe.

Nice crowd of people -- extortion, drug trafficking, "(unlawful) monetary transactions".

Boca seems like the kind of town where everybody would know who's who in the same line of business. Like for example, Patrice Tierney's brothers... "in August, Robert Eremian, of St. John’s (Antigua), Daniel Eremian, of Boca Raton, Fla., and two other men were indicted on racketeering, money laundering, and illegal gambling charges."

Small world, eh?

If I wanted to live in a town of corruption and thugs, with everyone scared and looking out for number one, I'd move to New York, where at least the jobs pay better.

of corruption and thugs too. Whitey Bulger was one of the biggest and most ruthless thugs there ever was. Who is still wanted by the FBI and running free till this day. Guess what- he was from right here in Boston. Ever watch the Departed? The whole movie was based on him. What hole have you been living in? Even in politics there is corruption here. Look at what just happened in the Tim Cahill case.

I haven't been watching the local TV news lately, can anyone tell me if this story has been picked up/reported on in mainstream TV media? The story seems custom-made for sensationalist local TV / Herald like it should be a featured story, with all the great teaser basics of local mob activity and thuggery, in the Four Seasons no less!... but it seems like it is not being reported on.

When the indictments first came out, back in the spring, the Globe covered them pretty extensively; even interviewed the victim:
