New Roslindale Stop & Shop not 'super,' but it has wider aisles than the new Star in Chestnut Hill, so there
Armed with coupons for 5% off our order and a free jar of Hellman's mayo, we decamped today for the rebuilt Stop & Shop at American Legion and Cummins highways (where the Bradlees used to be).
Now, they definitely had enough room to play with to make it a big-ass Super Stop & Shop, but for whatever reasons, they didn't - they basically re-created the Morrissey Boulevard Stop & Shop, i.e., a traditional supermarket. So no aisles full of kiddie DVDs, beach furniture and spy novels, but eh, Dedham isn't that far away (Note: Some people beg to differ). Besides, the store is still huge. Decent produce department, good meat selection and, most impressive, aisles wide enough that two carts can pass without getting tangled. Take that, fancy-shmancy Star Market in Chestnut Hill!
Another plus: The Stop & Shop gas station, so you can apply all those points you keep getting at Stop & Shop and buy some discount gas.
Also, they have a complete selection of Catholic religious candles:
I was tempted to ask at the Solution Center (what fuddy-duddy stores call a customer-service desk) if they could solve the grammar on the checkout signs, but they looked kind of busy:

I am happy this is done
I have had a significant role in this project and it pleases me to finally see it done. And for the lady who is displeased about the size of the store, where was she at the community meetings? There was a resounding request from the neighborhood for this to not be like the Dedham store.
I am on one hand very happy
I am on one hand very happy that Stop and Shop has shown renewed interest in building regular stores than superstores. Seriously, check their store locator feature on their website and you will see so many more superstores than regular stores that their company ought to be renamed "Super Stop and Shop". Either that or all superstores should be renamed "Stop and Shop" and all regular stores renamed "Mini Stop and Shop".
On the other hand, I too felt that the company somewhat missed an opportunity here. I also went to see the new store in Roslindale on Grand Opening Day and I must say the store isn't bad but not building a larger store leaves much space underutilized. A store this size though would be perfect to replace Hyde Park's old store because there isn't space to build a superstore there. Also, the seafood counter and florist department, which the old store had, are noticeably absent in the new store. I hope the company finds some way to put those features back in.
By the way, the Morrissey Blvd Store is larger than the new Roslindale store, does have a florist department (though not a seafood counter yet) and is listed as a superstore so the Roslindale store isn't exactly a replica of the Morrissey Blvd store.
Dorchester vs. Dedham
Interesting. The new store reminded me of Dorchester because of the layout - it's sort of clockwise (you basically start at the left, then move around toward the right) as opposed to the counterclockwise rotation of the Dedham store. And like Roslindale, Dorchester doesn't have all the Caldors-ish stuff in the middle.
But you're right: Where's the seafood? What kind of New England supermarket doesn't have fresh seafood?
Bring back the old school dungeon
Heartland. Classic store.
Heartland?
Why not Purity Supreme while you're at it? And Store 24 when it was cool.
Heartland was cool though....
Cement Floors, 20 foot tall shelves stacked to the ceiling, mazes of aisles that light up towards the end, and a checkout section with empty boxes on the way out to put your stuff in.
It was kind of like the Building 19 of food shopping.
I refuse to shop in a
I refuse to shop in a clockwise supermarket.
Seafood
"What kind of New England supermarket doesn't have fresh seafood?"
Apparently quite a few Stop & Shops - the only one relatively close to me that does have fresh seafood is the one in Brigham Circle. The Allston S&S is a Super S&S but all it has is frozen and prepackaged seafood.
Huh!
I guess I've been spoiled by Roche Bros. and Star Market/Shaw's.
Even the Jewel in Kankakee, Ill. has fresh seafood. For shame, Stop & Shop, for shame!
How come?
What were the objections to Dedhamifying the store? I'm just curious, not trying to get into an argument or anything (I didn't even know there were meetings, but to be honest, probably wouldn't have gone since it's at the other end of the neighborhood from us, and I've got two big Roche Bros. fans in the house).
Solve the grammar problem
Take a few six-packs of soda apart and bring them up to the "12 items or less" line. When they complain that you can't break up the six-packs, explain that the six-pack is the "item" this is a "piece" and that's "less than an item"...so you figured you were in the right line to buy 12 of them.
WIN
I like the way you think.
I too am thrilled to see this
I too am thrilled to see this long-overdue project come to this neighborhood. For the record, Stop & Shop has abandoned the Dedham-sized 'Super' Stop & Shop model in favor of the new store in Roslindale.
I am involved in the new Stop & Shop project coming to Truman Parkway in Hyde Park later this year and can also bet the critics who passed on the numerous public meetings will be out in force there too.
as a regular shopper at the CH location
I bet it's friendlier.
More variety needed
I made a quick stop to the store Saturday to pick up a ham. Very disapointed on the small selection - only 2 name brands in a 2' x 2' area. They have to do much better than that for me to give up shopping at smaller, local stores for a 'quick buy'. Of course, I would never consider doing much shopping in a large chain store when I sop at The Village Market to support Roslindale Village and Roche Bros., which is so generous to local charities that they deserve everyone's business.
Dedham S&S
The goal is to avoid The Dedham Stop & Shop. Quick Uie in Westwood, Lambert's for the fresh stuff, BJ's for the staples and a politically correct rotisserie chicken and hopefully I'm done.
Unfortunately I have to use the pharmacy there so I do go in. What strikes me is how few people are in those book/lawn chair/automotive/Staples aisles. The sprawl is bad enough w/o these store being so big.
