No doubt there's a good reason the city banned parking in Roslindale Square first thing in the morning for a rally that starts at 4 p.m.

So I'm sure somebody can explain the need to make sure nobody parks around Adams Park - and to have a police officer on hand to enforce the ban - starting around 9 a.m. even though the Democratic rally doesn't start until seven hours later. I bet the businesses around the park love it even more than people like me, mildly inconvenienced on a trip to the post office.

Please. If you parked there in the morning, when there was no one to stop you, and then disappeared for the rest of the day, you'd be pretty pissed when you had to go retrieve your car from wherever they towed it. I makes much more sense logistically to inconvenience a lot of people in a minor way than fuck a few people over and tow their cars because they parked in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You're not supposed to be parking in the Square for more than two hours at a time, anyway. The city recently papered windshields in the municipal lot to that effect, in fact.

So the rally starts at 4. Let's say it takes two hours to set up whatever it is they need setting up (and we'll ignore for a second the fact that people have events in the park all the time that don't require eliminating three blocks worth of parking spaces). Throw in another two hours to reduce the odds of people getting caught unawares.

So now you put up signs that say "NO PARKING, NOON TO 5 P.M."

Puh-lease! One requires a city worker doing his job for half an hour putting up signs.

The other means a cop gets to spend all day earning detail pay just to stand around. Maybe even overtime if he's working an extra shift.

If the kid and I can make it to the rally, we'll be sure to ask why they shut the square down for a day.

My guess is that Democrats will deny having anything to do with it, whereupon furious fingerpointing will commence between security parties engaged.

Not you or the city. Actually the city would make $20 off it.

in Roslindale Square anyway of late. This event should completely bring it to a halt for hours before and after. Does anyone know what is going on with the traffic signals?

Isn't the rally just in the park and not also on the surrounding streets? Wouldn't it be enough to just mark off one space for the Governor's limo?

Or maybe, free tacos for everybody at Wapo Taco! That's worth shutting down the street for! Block party on Poplar Street!

No, I have no idea. Plus, there's another rally up in, er, some other square at 5:30, so they won't be around that long. Too bad, I could do with a taco or two.

Having lived in the East Fenway for 5 years, I fell victim to such parking bans all the time: playoff games, super bowls, world series games and any other time they feared that beer-fueled Northeastern students would take to the streets and start flipping cars. Full weekends where you couldn't park for hours on end--and in a residential neighborhood. It never ends.

in terms of temporary tow zones and no parking zones where they have to post them x amount of hours before the time of the event.

If you don't, cars will in those spots and you have no legal authority to do anything about it.

As Adam commented above, it's perfectly easy to post signs several hours in advance, with the actual ban starting later.
