Two dead, three injured in East Boston fire

UPDATE: Cause determined to be faulty extension cord shorting out.

The Boston Fire Department reports the fire broke out around 2:40 a.m. at 64 Gove St.

Firefighters found the body of a man on the first floor of the three-story building, the department says. A woman on the third floor suffered a heart attack and died at Mass. General. Two other residents suffered burns and smoke inhalation, while one firefighter suffered a shoulder injury.

The deaths are Boston's first fire-related fatalities since December, 2008.

The department says it is still investigating the cause of the fire, which it says caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
