Let's hope it wasn't related to this:

Managers on the Orange Line, for example, say the wheel bearings on the train cars have been in use since the early 1980s and have outlived their useful life of 1 million miles by about 10 percent. If the bearing system fails, trains could derail, according to a memo requesting an additional $4 million to complete an overhaul that has already received $2 million. One such wheel bearing has already failed while a train was carrying passengers, according to the memo.

“An emergency replacement of all . . . must be undertaken,’’ the memo stated.

The $4 million to complete the project was not added to the capital budget, though the T hopes it eventually qualifies for stimulus money for an expanded revamp.

Hey guyz, let's go expand the commuter rail again...

The politicians know that city dwellers will vote incumbents in no matter what. Look how many people were supporting Wilkerson and Turner up to the bitter end. Why would those politicians do anything that benefits city dwellers when the votes are already bought and paid for in their mind? There's no reason to actually provide services to constituents whom are always going to shuffle up like zombies to pull the lever for you. Now those fickle suburbanites always complaining about this and that. Now there is a testy bunch which needs to be wooed with all kinds of baubles like commuter rail.

The bearing sighted in that quote that failed was actually on a #1 Red Line car a few years back. That resulted in all of those cars having their bearings changed out early. Since the Orange Line cars have the same bearings from the same supplier, they decided it was a good preventative measure to change them out early as well. Since that application in the CIP 2 yars ago, that has since been done.
That description of the same bearings being in use since the 1980s wasn't quite right. Rapid transit car wheel bearings are usually changed out several times during the life of a rapid transit car, and it is an item that is usually kept in stock and covered in running maintenance. The decision to change them all out at the same time required the capital request in the CIP.

The derailment last night was on the crossover which could be a switch problem, it didn't look like a wheel falling off.

all the complaining about the red line being crowded and unreliable is a bunch of crap by comparison. Not only are these cars outdated and running on used up gear, they are cramped, crowded, not big enough to take the passenger loadings, and lack space for wheel chairs anywhere but blocking the doorways.

Maybe us wealthier white people need to start whining more and things will get better.
