Patrick to nominate justice to lead Supreme Judicial Court

The Globe reports Roderick Ireland would be the first black chief justice of the state's highest court. The homination requires the approval of the Governor's Council. If approved, Ireland's shift would mean Patrick would then nominate somebody to take his current associate justice's slot. Current Chief Justice Margaret Marshall is retiring.

...aaannd there are already a bunch of
juvenile, uninformed, presumptuous and racist comments about this attached to the Globe article. Truly depressing. I'm not even going to bother looking at the Herald's story about the appointment.
I'll wager most of those commenting don't have an idea who Judge Ireland is, or that he's already a justice on the SJC.
Quite possibly today's stupidest question
Ireland will be the state's first black chief justice, but will he really be our first African-American chief justice? Margaret Marshall is from South Africa.
