Police urging people to stay off their phones on exiting the Stony Brook T stop

Joseph Porcelli reports on a community meeting with police and city officials in Jamaica Plain last night. District E-13 reports there were 21 robberies within 1,500 feet of the Orange Line stop between Nov. 1 and Feb. 14 and that most of the attackers are teens with prior robbery records:

Robbers get away because if your phone is stolen you can't call the police immediately. Don't use your phone on the way home, it won't get stolen, and you won't have to call the police.

Earlier:
Three teens arrested for failed robbery down the street from Stony Brook station.
Three charged for early-morning stickup near Stony Brook T stop.
Police detail five Jamaica Plain holdups Tuesday evening.

That really doesn't make much sense, since even crooks have the common sense to tell you to give them your wallet and phone now a days.

So what is it BPD, do what they say? Or lie and keep your phone?

Personally I think very quick jab to the nose is warranted, especially if it’s a punk teen who’s probably only doing it for kicks.

Take an old, worthless, deactivated phone and pretend to talk on it. Maybe have a couple friends with some hand cuffs stationed nearby.

Sounds like blame the victim to me. If it is that much of a regular problem, why no patrol?

Police are patrolling (and have been since that incident last fall when five people were robbed the same night). But if you draw a circle with a radius of 1500 feet around Stony Brook station, that's a fairly large area to keep under surveillance.

police reminding people to use common sense.

And it seems to me that if people insist on using their cell phone in an area where would-be robbers are targeting people chatting on cell phones as easy marks, they might as well wear a sign that reads "Hey Villians - Please Rob Me!".

You know what's so unbelievably sad? That all of this happens about a quarter mile from the E-13 station.

As for punching them in the face- they travel in packs of 2-3, sometimes it's a woman who does the taking while the dudes look threatening.

Instead of telling us what they're doing, they tell us to be scared little sheep. How about getting BPD and State Police officers out of their damn cruisers and onto foot patrols in the neighborhood? If everything happens within 1500ft of the station, GEE, MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE INCREASED PATROLS?

Also, why can't the MBTA go into their fancy video system and pull up video of these people coming and going? It's obvious they're taking the T to get to/from these muggings.

Ding!

The only time I've seen MBTA or other cops at a stations on foot is when they half ass checking bags with their fancy new "security" gizmos. And forget about it after rush hour when the majority of them go off duty.

There's a really simple solution to this that won't be implemented.

See, Porcelli is right. Nobody would be mugged if we all had to wear name tags!

"Robbers get away because if your phone is stolen you can't call the police immediately."

Isn't that what police call boxes are for?

Basic safety issue: Walking around talking on your phone is broadcasting, "I would make an awesome victim because I'm not paying attention to what's going on around me." It's not about not getting your phone stolen, it's about not looking like prey.
