Producer of New York TV show defends worst attempt ever at Boston accent as authentic

I believe the word they use in New York is chutzpah.

Via Carly Carioli, who doesn't believe it for a second.

Do the black people on that

Do the black people on that show talk like Stepin Fetchit?

who funnier, mrs funny or mrs funny's baby?

30 Rock is a hilarious situation comedy and IMO the best scripted 22-minute show on television that's not populated with hand drawn neon-yellow characters named Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, plus Snowball and Santa's Little Helper. While Julianne Moore's accent is more than adequate, her attitude is spot on. Cawksuckahs indeed! Once you settle in to the show and the characters, it's a laugh a minute.

Read the comments in the article Adam cites. It's pretty funny reading people complaining about Moore's execution of the Boston accent on a hilarious comedy show. She is one of the better movie actresses of our day performing on a comedy TV show and what do viewers do, argue about whether her accent is adequate. Now that's funny!

I don't mind Julianne Moore's accent

I don't mind Julianne Moore's accent all that much (though you're right, it's all in the attitude) but those NYC brownstones masquerading as -- what? Newbury Street brownstones? -- those were kind of embarrassing.

It's not about the accent...

It's about them playing on the stereotype of how people see Bostonians. They're poking fun at peoples' perceptions. They did the same thing when they introduced a Canadian character earlier this season. I do think Moore nailed the townie mom thing though.

great point

and it makes sense that the humor is in how they portray the sterotype and poke fun at it.

I had forgottten they grew up in Charlestown ... because she moved to Waltham. My favorite part was how she had only enough patience to allow him four words about his feelings. She negotiated him down from ten words.

You're wrong...

Don't you see the title of the article? The producers are defending her accent as "authentic." How are you rationalizing that her accent is an ironic joke? It's not! Julianne Moore even confirmed this. I've watched all of 30 Rock and it's easy to catch ironic intention. This is not one of those cases. Stop defending her horrible accent.

Curious

Do you watch the scripted 22 minute program that is usually on right before 30 Rock?

I do. It's hilarious.

I do. It's hilarious.

I Thought It Was A Joke

30 Rock is the funniest. Her accent is pretty bad. Some of the pronunciation is right on, but somehow it doesn't sound natural. But, I thought they were exaggerating it to be sarcastic about all the bad fake Boston accents in movies and television. I guess I was giving them too much credit.
