Protecting hallowed ground?
By adamg on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 8:29am
In between meetings yesterday, I stopped by Quincy Market for some lunch - and spotted this weird set of barriers next to Faneuil Hall. Obviously, the city Property Management Department felt compelled to protect these historically significant bricks from the rough treads of sneaker-wearing tourists. Or maybe it's where they put lost children.

That's where you get to criticize Menino.
Generally, those barricades
Generally, those barricades are around the building to make it possible for people to enter into the first and second floors. A lot of people will stand on the stairs and make it impossible to get in and when people try to get out, they get hit and injured.
It's particularly ironic
When those barricades are across the Freedom Trail.
Yes, well, it is even worse
Yes, well, it is even worse when people can't get into one of the most important buildings on the Freedom Trail because of the crowds watching people juggle, play with yo yos, or perform poorly on a bagpipe.
How do you tell if somebody's doing badly on a bagpipe?
Because there was a bagpiper there yesterday and all I could think was "how in the world can he stand being dressed like that on a day like this?" (and yesterday was much more pleasant than Weds.).
I've heard some fantastic
I've heard some fantastic players in Scotland...however, the guy who is nicely dressed and plays by Sam Adams is the good one and the bad one performs between Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market.
Obstructing doors is annoying, but this doesn't stop it...
It just creates a rectangle where there is an emptiness, so people are even more compressed on each side of the barricades. A sign and a wooden door swinging out at a person combined would probably send a strong enough message that a person needs to move.
These have been popping up everywhere and are an eyesore
These have been popping up everywhere and are an eyesore. If they were needed for a particular event, that would be one thing, but then they should be removed after. It's a disgrace that they are by Faneuil Hall, at the bottom of the large steps by City Hall, all along Cambridge Street, by City Hall, and lots of other places.
I actually took a picture of these, too. I hope your posting helps get rid of them.
I'll tell you what an eyesore is
I'll tell you what an eyesore is - those concrete berms and chain-link fence combinations full of wooden palettes between Haymarket and the Greenway - right along the Freedon Trail, too!
Agreed. I'm disappointed the City has allowed these to continue
I'd also add to the list the jersey barriers that were put up seemingly to "protect" the limited greenspace on the backside of the Garden from prevent parking (mostly by Sheriffs and officers on detail...). Note the area
Before (scroll to the left and you'll see another illegal parker as he's leaving...but this car is still always there, and the city does nothing.)
and After (jersey barriers instead of simply towing)
And I can't believe whatever architecture and disability commissions exist allow these
stone bollards outside the O'Neill Federal Building. I know security and all, but the Federal Reserve did a MUCH classier job.
They put those up a couple of
They put those up a couple of years ago to cut down on the street performers. The irony of putting steel barriers across the Freedom trail was lost on them, it seems. Lately they've just been put into odd configurations, and trail walkers have been able to continue uninterrupted, at least.
Those barriers have been
Those barriers have been there for months at least. Sometimes they've got two of those things up. I wonder if they're just storing the barriers there
Temporary bike racks?
That's what these always look like to me, and they are sometimes used that way, though probably not in this location.
I Wonder What The Authorities Would Do...
... if a bunch of people hopped inside of the barricades and had a picnic?

Flashmob Picnic?
Excellent idea, Suldog. Maybe the Polite Tea Party people would be up for it?
Never mind this strange free space...
...they've just announced that Joe Sciacca is leaving Beat the Press on WGBH because of his new Herald position. They're asking for suggestions on who should be his new replacement -- and Adam, you would be a perfect choice. (I mean, you cover the City Council better than anyone, for starters!) Let the petition drive begin! Read all about it here:
