Rare Boston sight: A shooting star

Jef Taylor reports on a sighting after 7 p.m.:

Saw a shooting star break up over Brookline skies.

Superguppy reports:

Came from the east headed toward the Arboretum.

Maureen Gillan reports from Dorchester:

My sister & I saw it over Codman Square just after 7 coming back from voting. Very bright & beautiful.

Matt Noyes at NECN writes it was apparently part of Comet Hartley 2:

If you saw this, consider yourself very lucky to have seen a rare phenomenon. If you missed it, keep an eye to the sky and perhaps you will be lucky, too!

I was wondering what that was.

I saw it cross Hyde Park Av. in the Woodbourne area.

It seemed to be too low to be a meteor. It looked a little like fireworks but traveling too far a distance. I thought it might be debris from an airplane.

Fascinating that it was in fact a shooting star.

I was in North Attleboro at my daughters soccer prictice tonight and I saw this shooting star. What a great sight to see it breaking up at the end. I have seen a lot of shooting stars but this was the best I have seen.

I like to lay back in my hot tub and look for satellites. I saw one and then a few minutes later saw the huge east to west streak of the meteorite!

She decided to take an impromptu vacation after her humiliating loss in Delaware. Unfortunately she learned the hard way that you really need to take your vehicle into the shop for a quick checkup before you head out on a long trip.

Thankfully she was able to drop into Salem where she was able to pick up some essence of newt and gargoyle tears that should get her another 1,000 miles or so.

We saw this last night from Cambridge. Very cool! I was surprised at how large it was and thought at first it must be a firework, except the angle was all wrong.

I saw this last night too! Saw the whole flight as well as the beautiful explosion. I've been researching all day online to see if there are any reports written about it or anything and much to my disappointment I haven't found anything :(

This was the most amazing thing I have ever seen, I must know more!!

We were standing outside the polling place when we spotted the fireball moving across the northern sky in Springfield. We were standing under several streetlights and it was very bright and slow-moving.

I seen it last night driving close to home with my family. It was so enormous compared to the little ones I've seen before! This was so bright! It was an absolutely amazing thing to witness!

I was heading nothbound on RT 24 near rt 139 exit and saw it
cut across the sky and start breaking up around the blue hills
area (from my view). There were so many planes in the sky, so
I'm suprised to have seen and heard so little about this. Made
a wish - we'll see.

I was holding a sign for a candidate in Andover when her son and I looked up and watched the shooting star. We both agreed it must have been a shooting star but I have never seen one that close - and the way it fizzled out, it looked like white fireworks. Amazing. I really didn't think it was a shooting star until I searched on Google and then found this site! I feel so special........

I live in a downtown tower with a North facing view and I see shooting stars three or four times a year- last one was about 4 months ago - had a greenish streak to it and it lasted a few seconds- one of the best I have seen. Always a cool sight. Wish I saw it.

I live in a rural area of NH and frequently see shooting stars. Tonights was the largest, closest, and brightest I've ever seen. It was traveling east to west around 8:00. I was on Route 101, around Raymond NHm and heading west toward Route 93. I would describe it just like the others who have commented here. We both thought it was a firework at first, but it lasted too long. Wonderful sighting!
