Reports are coming in of power outages across the area, like mid-Cambridge, Tremont Street downtown and Newton Centre.

And Georgy Cohen reports Somerville Police had to help her and other riders off an 89 bus that hit a downed tree and power line.

Thanks to William Ricker for the link to the National Grid map.

Glad it isn't trash night

My condolences to those of you in areas were it is.

Lights flickering

in East Boston and 4 barrel fulls of water tossed out of the basement. Ugh.

Question

If they're reading Universal Hub by candlelight (i.e., power's out), how is the computer monitor being powered?

You don't have a foot treadle to generate power?

Or an iPhone :-).

Laptop...

... batteries go at least an hour, and if you have your WAP on the UPS...

Fortunately, we didn't get hit, unlike over the river in Newton. Heh.

Laptops have batteries, but what about routers?

My DSL router does not have battery backup -- do most cable modems?

No

No, that's why he said you'd still need your WAP (wireless access point...like a router/modem) on a UPS (universal power supply...aka big battery).

In a city like Brookline which has a free wireless connection, you *might* be able to get onto their service if it isn't on the same power lines as whatever knocked out your house.

Nearly all cell phone companies have *some* way of "tethering" your cell phone to your computer as a digital modem which would give you 3G speeds for data if the cell towers were unaffected.

While it's a lot more difficult to get online during a power outage, there are a few different ways you could try to go about doing it.

Some do

My cable modem has battery backup. Let me verify by unplugging it and see if it...
Yep. Just posted this with the cable modem unplugged.
