Red Line shut down at Kendall; person hit by train

1:30 update: Scene cleared, full service resuming.

12:45 update: Red Line service restored between Park and Broadway. Busing continues between Park and Harvard.

Service is stopped in both directions as rescue crews extricate the body of the victim from underneath the inbound train.

Finn reports he was in the first car of the train:

The driver honked and yelled "No!" and then slammed on the brakes. Then we sat halfway in the station for 10 minutes. People on the platform were yelling, etc. They let us out manually and EMTs were already shouting and looking under the train with flashlights.

Harvard and Broadway, and running a single track shuttle train between Alewife and Harvard.

On the website, they list a ton of bus routes that are delayed because of the busing, as well. I'm assuming these are where they got drivers/buses for the red line diversion.

I was waiting for the redline at Shawmut when they first announced the accident, I was shocked. Then when I listened for details about cutting off the redline, I was a little upset because I had somewhere to go. They announced that Broadway would be the last stop and that there would be shuttle buses there to take us to various places along the Broadway-Harvard route. The bus ride was alright, but the process of waiting and fighting my way onto a bus was pure craziness. People were cursing at each other, pushing recklessly. It was wild. While I was on the bus, I was thinking to myself "Damn, if this is what the buses are like, I wonder how it was at Kendall with all those paramedics and whatnot...". I started feeling a little more thankful for being where I was, when I was there because that kind of thing could have happened anywhere, you know?

Yeah, good thing those pesky paramedics were at another station and not yours, huh?

I have known this man since my birth. He was one of my best friend's fathers and a diabetic. This was an accident caused by his low blood sugar that cause him to fall.

Anon: I searched all the broadcast news stations @5:00pm and not a single word was mentioned. Too many thieving dead sherifs, gunshot knife and pipe attacks, Not to mention the fires and car crashes.
THANK GOODNESS FOR THE WEB. PS.I am so sorry for your lost

Can you confirm this? I was standing about 10 feet away, with maybe 4 or 5 others as this happened. We all only saw a flurry of a coat fly by and into the train. Traumatizing enough to think that this man took his own life before our very eyes. If you have other information, let me know- It would certainly give us a different perspective on what actually happened. Very sorry for your loss.

I was entering the subway when people were exiting. A couple of people said the same thing, that this man did not accidently fall. He was purposely leaning over the tracks looking at the train coming, teetering as though waiting for the right moment to jump. And then he jumped.

People with diabetes who are suffering a low blood sugar episode act very erratically. Some act as though they are drunk, and many act completely irrationally with great focus.

I am a close friend of the victim and trying to resolve how this happened. Would please you share any more details of what you saw immediately prior to the accident? Are there others that you spoke to who might have this information?

Deceased was my first cousin and yes, he suffered from diabetes. Possibly, his blood sugar got low and he suffered a fainting spell stumbling in front of an on coming train.

Someone should look at the security camera tape.

Interesting. He was only 57 and was a librarian at MIT from 1983 until last month. Laid off or otherwise let go perhaps? Worried about the consequences of being unemployed? There's so much to wonder about, being unemployed these days is extremely stressful, especially if you have a family to support. It is BY NO MEANS offensive to this man if anyone wonders whether he did jump to his death. Life can be extremely difficult, especially these days, I feel for those who are struggling as I am too. It is not at all a question of the strength of his character if he did. If anything, he needs our prayers now.

Heartfelt post.

It is unlikely that he took his own life. He was not that type. He suffered from diabetes and we are somewhat certain that he suffered some kind of reaction either to a very high or low blood sugar, perhaps inducing cardiac arrhythmia (likely to happen to diabetics) and that caused severe confusion and he ended up walking off the platform in front of an on coming train.

If someone were to analyze security tapes at the time of accident, that would shed more light on what actually happened.

He was a research librarian he was a scholar and has a doctraite degree. His father was a professor and a scholar of Arabic and Islamic studies and in India. He has written many books regarding India's economy and the unrrest between Hindus and Muslims in India. He was well known and wel respected in the Muslim community around the world. I had the pleasure of metting on several occasions and he was a one of the most interesting person to talk to. It is a great loss not just to the Muslim community but to all.
