Roslindale strip best known for bargain oulets could get high-end wine and cheese shop

Two Roslindale natives are seeking city permission to open a new liquor store on American Legion Highway that would also offer gourmet alternatives to the hot dogs, doughnuts and fried things that now make up the take-out palette there.

Thomas and Fred Falcucci went before the Licensing Board this morning for permission to buy a liquor license to open the American Legion Market at 569 American Legion Highway, across from the Haley School.

The two would pay Serino's on Hyde Park Avenue $110,000 for its liquor license. Serino's is giving up its retail liquor sales to concentrate on wholesale food operations. The board could decide tomorrow whether to approve the license transfer.

The Falcuccis' attorney, Joseph Devlin of Lynn, said the new store would bring competition to an area now served by just Rusty's Liquors. "Competition breeds variety, it breeds savings for the consumers and it's good for the buying public." He said that the typical customer - who might come from Roslindale, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury - would "grab some wine and some gourmet cheese." The area doesn't have any places like that now, he said.

In response to a question from board Chairman Daniel Pokaski, he acknowledged the store would also sell more plebian fare, such as six packs of Bud. "I hope so, because all three of us drink it," he said, referring to himself and the Faulcuccis.

... a high end wine and cheese (and chocolate) place already. So this proposed new business would not be the first in the area (if the area is Roslindale). ;~}

The more I hear of Pokaski's wit and wisdom, the more I am convinced that he surely must be overpaid (and would feel this way even if he were being paid a nominal stipend, rather than a real salary).

Solera and the cheese shop are up in the Square. Yeah, as the crow flies, that's not all that far from where this place would go, but they're really two different markets. Also, not to defend Pokaski, but it was the Faluccis' lawyer who brought up Rusty's and the allegedly underserved area, not Pokaski. One of Rob Consalvo's aides, who also attended the hearing, said the new liquor store would also serve Mattapan, which might be closer to the new store than Rozzie Square.

Wondering what's been going on down there - walk past this building every day. They've been busy cleaning up the lot and making tons of cosmetic improvements. Exciting news ~!
[ any insight as to what's happening with the auto repair shop on the other side of the church next door to this new shop? it's undergone a drastic transformation in the past few weeks - old junkers gone, new coat of paint, etc. etc.]

I get more frustrated with Pokaski with every UHub post.

Hmmm... something going on here. I doubt West Roxbury is driving to the Legion Hwy for anything other than to visit graves once a year.

I would welcome the chance to buy cheese and wine on my way home from school with the kids!

is Cisco or Mad Dog 20/20.

I cannot see anyone from WR/Roslindale/JP coming to this strip mall to shop.

We're there a fair amount for gardening stuff (gotta love City Farms), car washing and, yes, even a hot dog or two at Simco's. As somebody mentions down below, it actually takes us less time (from up near the Hyde Park line) to get there than to the Square.

I meant. Whenever I am in any store (Radio Shack, Auto Parts Store) in the strip Mall, I can say with confidence I do not see the clientele that would support a gourmet cheese and wine shop. Granted it is a good start, but it will take a lot more to turn that mall around.

Give Louie the Florist a try for garden stuff on Walk Hill...He is a great guy that always give us good advice.

Or the one in back of the Wendy's?

The liquor store won't be in the strip mall, but sort of kitty-corner across from it.

Not the one in back of Wendys...

This one on Walk Hill and Canterbury St

I go there all the time. Goodyear has the best deals on oil changes. Popeye's has the best fast food. Save-A-Lot is, well, always an adventure that comes with some astonishingly low prices. Scrub-a-Dub is good too. The only McDonald's for miles. And there are a lot of other stores that look interesting but I just haven't been in yet.

That said, I know what you mean. I don't see a lot of my neighbors there. But I don't think they get out that much anyway.

Falcucci has owned the granite company on Cummins Highway for years. From what I hear, he's always been a good businessman and neighbor.

I laugh at these comments that seem negative and distrustful. If you live by Sacred Heart Church or School it's easier to go to American Legion than to go to Rozzie Square. On any afternoon, the Square is a standstill and American legion traffic moves (sometimes too fast).

I hope he does well and brings good clients to that area.

Traffic to Roslindale Sq is horrible...

1/2 hour from Forrest Hills to Rosi Sq anytime near 5.

Fortunately, where we live, it's just as easy - and a lot faster - to take Hyde Park Avenue from Forest Hills, then head up by the Sacred Heart School.

I visited the new American Legion Market this past weekend. I was blown away at the beautiful building and huge selection of goodies. Prices seem a bit less expensive here then in the area. They had everything that I went there for.

I will certainly be a customer here. Good prices, good selection, great service.

I got 4 bottles of quality wine for under $50 - Yay!!!

Great! Anything would be better than the trash dump that's there now!

Rosi needs whatever it can get, whats the downside to this? I live closer to the Arboretum end but could see myself pulling in there from time to time.
