Boston, Somerville to rip up snow-related tickets today

Talk about customer service: Lauren Bettencourt at Channel 4 reports Mayors Tom Menino and Joe Curtatone have ordered their cities to waive any tickets given out today for violations of the "snow" emergency.

Yeah it's bad precedent.

Pointless vote pandering that does more harm than good.

While I agree, I was never notified until I got into work and checked UH.

Apparently the Boston TXT message alert system I signed up for never went out yesterday.

Funny enough, i did get one declaring it over last night. Luckily I wasn’t parked on a road that needed to be moved, but still it’s kinda BS that their system didn’t work. Especially since I was relying on it to get parking ban info.

Any else have issues?

And those who were towed?

The troopers were towing the DCR-jurisdiction snow emergency routes in the Fenway throughout the afternoon. Good luck getting those fees waived.

Wasn't there a similar non-storm a couple or three years ago, when a snow emergency was declared in Meninoville and the entire fleet of contractors was dispatched to plow rain? At least this time I haven't seen many, if any, plows out so far.

Oh, there were plows

More on the DCR roads than Boston roads, but I certainly encountered plenty of plows on city roads too. About half had their blades down, a few going fast enough that sparks were flying off of them. Nearly all were driving assholeishly.

Plow's made at least two passes on our street

But then, since we're way up here in the hills, we actually have snow on the ground now. OK, not much, granted, but still.

Plowing salt

There was so much salt on my street that no snow was accumulating, but they plowed anyhow. I wonder how much money they wasted on plows last night.

While I think tearing up the tickets is a bad idea I really do think they should wait to actually tow your car until they know there will actually be snow...

Plow rain. That's funny.

I got to see a whole mess of plows and salt trucks cold chillin' over on hooker(?) street, having food with their moms and watching the TiVo.

This is a tough one

The positive guy in me wants to tip my cap to Menino. I want to praise him for something, so I'll praise him for giving a mea culpa in the wake of a bad weather forecast. I appreciate that he wants to be fair.

However, I'm troubled by the selective enforcement of parking rules in Boston, and even more so by the lack of parking garages in the city. I see a big vacant lot on Western Ave that Harvard isn't using...buy it back and build a snow emergency garage there for Allston/Brighton residents.

Oh, and next time there's actual snow, TOW THE FRICKIN' CARS FROM WARREN ST. Don't leave 5 (expletive) piles of snow there that take up precious parking areas.

Emergency Parking

Funny you say that. There's already free parking during a snow emergency at the following locations:

http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/storm.asp?selNeighborhood=Allston%2FBrighton

Municipal Lot #003 115 Harvard Ave
60 No Charge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Municipal Lot #002 398 Market St
42 No Charge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harvard University Parking Facility 111 Western Ave
700 No Charge

Not too far from the vacant lot. Although, not that great for the majority of residents. ut with plenty of time before the storm, it should be a min burden.
