MBTA Transit Police report arresting a Massachusetts Bay Community College student yesterday on charges he fondled a woman's buttocks on a Red Line train between Charles/MGH and Park Street last month.
Brian Canning, 26, was charged with indecent assault and battery after his alleged victim spotted him again last week, about a month after the initial attack.
According to a Transit Police report, investigators asked the victim for her CharlieCard so they could track her movements through fare gates and watch surveillance video to see if anybody matched her description of the man who cupped her buttocks around 9 a.m. on Nov. 1. When they found a match, they were able to look up the Charlie Ticket he used - and then the number of another Charlie Ticket he used the day he apparently lent the first one to an acquaintance.
Police say they then tracked the uses of the two tickets and found they were regularly used at the Riverside stop on the Green Line. Video showed the suspect would come through the gates with a group of other young adults. This past Monday, detectives staked out Riverside, where they saw the man and the other people getting out of a Mass. Bay Community College shuttle van. In the meantime, detectives re-interviewed the victim, who identified the suspect based in part on "his chubby cheeks," along with his U.S. Navy cap and glasses.
Yesterday, the cops took a trip out to the college, where the head of security was able to identify the man in the photos as Brian Canning - whom the T and campus cops were able to locate quickly on campus and place under arrest.
Canning was released on personal recognizance at his arraignment today in Boston Municipal Court, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. He is scheduled to return to court for a hearing on Dec. 28.
