They win the lottery

Geeky Mama reports her son got their first choice for a Boston Public School kindergarten:

... There are some very good things about the Curley, and my husband and I are going to talk it over tonight. Our second and third choice schools have very low wait list numbers, so if we don't take our names off those lists, I think there is a very good chance we will be placed there, probably soon. I think we have to decide whether we're done with the whole uncertainty thing and want to take our names off the wait list, or that whether things we like about Haley and Mozart (proximity, for one thing) outweigh the uncertainty part. ...

Eighth choice

The blogger actually says that was her eighth choice, but that she would have been happy getting anything in the top 10.

The school assignment stuff seems so complicated.

Some people make it more

Some people make it more complicated than it needs to be. But it is hard to argue that point with a parent who is convinced that they have little to no chance of getting a good assignment unless they carefully thread a very narrow needle. We took a pretty low key approach, only putting four schools on the form, and got our fourth choice, which had really only been added as an afterthought. We planned on playing the wait list game, but once our daughter was at the school, we very quickly became convinced that it was a great place for her. So convinced, in fact, that we took her name off the waiting lists for the other schools.

Having grown up in a suburb,

Having grown up in a suburb, I think I'm just too used to the "There's a school down the block; of course that's where I'm going!" mentality.

And then ...

There's the whole exam-school thing (supposedly we find out this week, yikes).

There are good schools in Boston, but, yes, parents here have to work a lot harder - and worry a lot more - than parents on the other side of the Charles or Neponset.

at least it's not like

at least it's not like Arkansas, where some people argue that the only way to get good advanced high school classes is to go to the state-wide boarding school for the last two years of high school ( http://asmsa.org/ )
