Things you didn't know existed: Outlaw ATMs

The state Division of Banks reports its inspectors found more than 300 ATMs that aren't registered with the state as required by law.

The bandit boxes are located in convenience stores and similar locations. They are not owned by banks, but are supposed to be following the same rules - the state says another 100 machines are registered, but not in compliance with state law:

"Non-bank ATM operators must follow state regulations, register their machines, and make sure consumers are appropriately aware of the fees and ownership of a machine," said David J. Cotney, the Acting Commissioner of the Division of Banks. "Consumers must have a high level of trust and protection when using an ATM that is not at a bank, and following our registration rules and regulations provides that trust and protection."

Violations include failure to list a 24-hour toll-free contact number and the name and address of the owner and the phone number for a state consumer-complaint number.
