Christmas in September

It's Christmas in September at the West Roxbury Home Depot, which has everything from giant fake trees to giant snow globes to a giant collection of Martha Stewart ornaments, including gold-speckled pine cones. When does WODS switch to Christmas music?

What they cleared out to put the xmas kitsch there was all the grilling supplies. They don't sell charcoal again until next year. And it was in the 80s yesterday. Do some people really stop grilling after September 22nd?

No, but most people have their charcoal by September 22nd.

Home Depot got rid of all the seeds, including herbs, in July. Dude was like, "um, it's too late for gardening -- you plant seeds in the spring."

Except that stuff like herbs and lettuce and spinach grow in a few weeks and grow unless they freeze, so you can still plant new batches of them into September or October. Also, does no one else grow herbs in pots in the kitchen?

Everything that company does is regional or national. Atlanta even programs the timers for the lights in the stores.

Christmas roll out in the Northeast and the Midwest was last week.

This is easily the earlier ever.

Christmas rollout starts even earlier this year because the retailers claim they had very poor sales last year. Just like the argument they used to start Christmas rollout early last year, and the year before that, etc., etc..

Here's a thought - perhaps if Christmas rollout didn't begin until after Veteran's Day (as was the case for decades), the retailers would actually have much better sales than they have had in recent years.

Why? Because it's not so much the economic downturn that's been affecting people's interest in Christmas shopping in recent years - it's the increased overselling of Christmas by the marketing people that's turning people off the idea of early shopping. Not to mention the overreporting by the media of the inevitable "holiday sales projections".

It's a cinch to imagine Home Depot would sell more charcoal...

Yes, it seems a peculiar conclusion that I would want to buy more Xmas kitsch the longer I look at it. Is the four-month display time intended to break down my resistance? Or do they expect I will get bored with the plastic snowman I bought in September by the time December comes and just have to get a plastic reindeer too?

Maybe they could compromise and put the charcoal back on the shelf under a "for bad little boys and girls" sign.

I can't believe this crap is already out in stores. What the heck happened to FALL??? I need a good rake, maybe one of those giant pumkin bags to put my leaves in, and some fall lawn fertilizer.

What I don't need is Christmas crap cluttering up my basement. Who actually buys this stuff in September???

I can see buying 'presents' throughout the year to avoid the big pocketbook hit, but decorations? They can wait. And keep waiting. There are a few holidays to enjoy first, like Halloween and Thanksgiving. And Columbus Day, but there aren't any good foods attached to that day ;)

We're 5 days after the end of summer (calendar-wise anyway) and Santa shows up. Sad. Looks like Suldog will have to start a "Halloween Comes First" campaign. Soon, it will be "Labor Day Comes First".
