Two-alarm fire damages former convent in South Boston

The Boston Fire Department reports a fire at the vacant Gate of Heaven convent, 127 I St., did roughly $100,000 in damage and sent one firefighter to the hospital with back and elbow injuries.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor cuts and burns.

The fire, reported around 2:45 a.m., started in the basement and spread upwards, the department says, adding investigators are still looking for a cause. The Gate of Heaven church was not damaged.
