Exploding laptop battery sparks fire at Roslindale assisted-living facility

The Boston Fire Department reports no injuries from the explosion this afternoon on the fourth floor of Sophia Snow Place, 1205 Centre St.:

Battery fragments were found on the couch, which ignited, and a table the laptop was on, which also ignited.

The fire was confined to just one room, but fourth-floor residents were moved to the first floor as a precaution. The department declared two alarms to bring in extra firefighters to help with their evacuation. Damage was estimated at $100,000.

This caused a traffic

This caused a traffic nightmare with Centre St. backed well through the rotary and Jway (much worse than usual).

Can the property owner recover damages from the battery maker?

I would hope so, but I don't know the law in this area. This is a pretty scary story since lots of folks use laptops at home these days. (Including me, as I type this.)
