Two Boston College buildings evacuated because of chlorine leak; Beacon Street shut

UPDATE: Everything back to normal; roads re-opened.

Firefighters from Boston and Newton evacuated the Merkert Chemistry Center and the neighboring Campion Hall because of a possible noontime leak from supposedly empty chlorine cylinders in a delivery truck.

The Boston Fire Department reports the driver of the AirGas truck, which had eight 150-lb. chlorine cylinders was on Beacon Street, about to turn onto the BC campus for a delivery, when he smelled chlorine. The truck was also carrying propane and hydrogen.

Beacon Street and side streets leading to it are shut down. Four or five houses on Stone and Cedar streets in Newton were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
