America, land of the free

My favorite part: the guy with the pre-law McMansion, bitching about the McMansion someone else wants to build.

When are people going to realize that, when you live in America, you don't have the right necessarily to tell others what to do with their private property?

I don't see any guy in the

I don't see any guy in the article with a "pre-law McMansion"...

Uhhh...

There are a number of laws governing what I can and can't do on my private property. Zoning laws are just the beginning of it; I bought my house with the knowledge that I can't add stories to it and turn it into a skyscraper, because the neighborhood is zoned to keep it a neighborhood of house-sized houses. If I suddenly decide I want to own a skyscraper instead of a little house, I need to move to where skyscrapers are permitted, rather than bitch about how this is my private property dammit.

I also can't molest children on my private property. Or murder people. Or prescribe meds to people without being licensed. Or make harassing phonecalls to people. Or run a hairdressing business since I'm not licensed for that either. I can't have exotic pets on my private property.

What an oppressive city this is. It's my property; why can't I do anything I want on it?
