Mike Ball reports on a Boston School Committee budget hearing at Boston English last night; includes a chart showing proposed cuts or increases at a random collection of schools and considers the politics of it all.
I give Connolly credit for being honest that he didn't know how the process worked.
As I said all last year and in the debates, the favored get what they want, the rest get scraps,
the system is not fair, Court Street is a byzantine mess, etc., etc.
This article is an excellent read for anyone getting up to speed on BPS. It is all a game, a yearly charade of 'the sky is falling, the sky is falling' and then Mayor Menino can ride in on his high
horse and 'save the world' by keeping the sky afloat from his largess. The Globe, the Media, and the hand picked school committee (illegally appointed in back room deals for the last 15 plus years) play their part,
and John McDonough (who is a decent person and will tell you the truth about the numbers off the record) is their to provide the spreadsheets.
It is a Tragedy, and a Farce, but it is presented as straight drama.
In a strange way, it's refreshing to read a message from someone even more jaded than I. After finally settling the last of three into an exam school, I eased off a bit.
I do believe from my wee universe of three sons that it is possible to cobble together enough good school assignments to get your kids a good education in our fair town. It really shouldn't be so much work.

And what of this is surprising?

I find it quite boring.
Even more skeptical
