Woman mugged, groped at knifepoint in broad daylight on Brookline path

A woman walking on Marion Path near Griggs Park was mugged and fondled at knifepoint by two men around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a Brookline Police report posted on the Jewish Boston mailing list.

The alert, by Sgt. Robert Disario, says the woman was "walking when grabbed from behind by two men, who subsequently stole several of her belongings" and then sexually attacked her.

Both suspects are described as white men, in their 20s and about 6' tall. Both wore black bandanas with white designs covering their faces. One had on a black Champion hoodie; the other a gray hoodie. Both had dark pants.

Police are maintaining "a steady, heavy police presence in the entire area," and are urging women to stay away from poorly lit and lightly traveled areas. That part of Brookline has a number of isolated pedestrian paths up and down hills.

Stories like this make me sick to my stomach. I am trying to get my significant to apply for one of the firearms permits so she can carry pepper spray.

She was jumped and subdued before she could react. Having a weapon wouldn't have helped her. Actually having Mace or pepper spray might have done more harm than good because. If she had a chance to react, the odds of her sucessfully disabling 2 attackers who had covered mouths and noses with pepper spray are a lot worse than her odds of escape by screaming and running.

I used to walk on those paths when I lived in the area. Not late at night, of course, but I wouldn't have thought twice at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Adam, all other reports of the incident that I have seen are that this very unfortunate woman was "groped", with the tab report quoting a police officer as specifying that at least part of the groping was over the clothing. Without meaning to minimize what was certainly a traumatic incident for this poor woman, should the headline be revisited?

I put 2 and 2 together and got 5. Stupid. Still a scary incident.

I feel for this woman, who must have been terrified.
