Workers to Cambridge Health Alliance: Give us a break

In a federal lawsuit filed yesterday, workers at Cambridge Health Alliance, which runs hospitals in Cambridge, Somerville and Everett, charge they routinely have 30 minutes deducted from their pay for lunch even when they actually worked through lunch.

The class-action suit, filed in US District Court in Boston, alleges that even when workers did take a lunch break, they were "regularly interrupted with work-related matters during meal breaks." Workers were also not paid for work done before or after their scheduled shifts, the suit charges, adding that until recently, the hospital did not keep records of exact hours worked by employees who are supposed to be on the clock.

Sounds like many of the institutions in the state. Anyone who has worked part time for a non-profit, museum, the symphony, ect. can tell you that these organizations love shorting non-management every chance they get.

That's a gross over-generalization. Non-profits in the Commonwealth are, by definition, charities, trying to provide a service to the community. They try to do what the can with limited resources. Note also that 'management' compensation and benefits at non-profits are regulated by the state and the IRS.

As for this case - even without knowing the facts, I'm willing to wager that this case will settle, CHA workers will each get a check for a few hundred bucks, and the plaintiffs' attorneys will receive six-figure fee awards. Suits like this have become an epidemic in California and Florida; great to see they're taking root in Mass., too.
