Workers force evacuation of Dorchester apartment building by using gas-powered saw in basement

The Boston Fire Department reports that workers removing an old boiler at 16 Algonquin St. this morning set off carbon-monoxide alarms when they fired up a gas-powered saw in the basement.

You're not supposed to use gas-powered saws indoors, the department says. As soon as workers shut off the saw, readings went down, the department says, adding that the four-story building was evacuated but that nobody required medical care.

Those alarms trip when things are getting hazardous. For the workers, things were getting dangerous.

Of course on a day like today, one window and one door open would mean about 27 air changes a second ...

Yay for CO alarms.

What could have crippled multiple people became a minor event, and a screwup will be corrected.

CO detector or no CO detector, using a gas-powered saw indoors could've killed many people!
