Baby chinchilla stolen from Allston pet shop; could die if not returned

A baby chinchilla (not the one stolen).A baby chinchilla (not the one stolen).

Brittani reports:

A friend of mine's family owns a pet store in Allston, MA. Yesterday a 3-week old baby chinchilla was stolen from their store (The Pet Shop). A chinchilla needs its mother until it is at least 8-weeks old.

They are only asking that the chinchilla be returned. They will NOT press charges, they will NOT ask any questions. They just want this baby back with its mother where it can be safe and healthy. They believe the person responsible is a woman, early twenties, brown hair with a nose ring. If you know anything about this, or even the person who did it, please drop it off (or have them drop it off) at the Pet Shop, Ritual Arts, or Basics Furniture in Allston, MA.

Why do people insist on keeping as pets these exotic animals that are not meant to live as pets in a city enviroment? Didn't we just read here a while back about the lost/stolen iguana in Mission Hill? Now this. Not to mention pet monkeys chewing off faces.

chinchilla's are not exotic by any means.

not exactly exotic, or hard to care for for that matter.

Dogs and cat's take more work.

Plenty of people here in the city keep exotic animals as pets, and, as the owner of an exotic bird myself, I find nothing wrong with it. What i do find wrong is the fact that this chinchilla was stolen from a pet shop, which is another indication of the wanting something for nothing attitude that's all too prevalent in our society and culture these days. Here's hoping that woman who stole the baby chinchilla is confronted and given the choice of either returning the stolen chinchilla with good grace, or facing arrest.

McGee, unfortunately passed over into Bird Heaven a year ago last February, due to unknown causes, at the age of roughly 20 years. After two months of mourning and doing research on other exotic birds, I chose a beautiful, sweet Congo African Grey Parrot (a girl), who I named Aziza, which means "Gorgeous" in Swahili. Aziza, at 16 months old, is thriving, talking and whistling at a mile a minute.

May McGee's feathery memory be a blessing.

Aziza sounds delightful. Tell her I said tweet.

If you've ever stepped into the filthy and cruel hellhole that is 'The Pet Shop' in Allston, animals can never be "stolen" from there - only rescued.

Jim Gentile is the most caring and responsible pet shop manager I have ever known. You want to be Supreme PETA Badass, go bitch about a suburban mall puppy mill.

Ten bucks says this particular anon is the one who stole the chinchilla, trying to justify their actions. Look, you know what you did was wrong, just do the right thing before the poor animal dies because you wanted to show how righteous you were. Then please jump off the Tobin.

Rescued? a three week old baby from its mother? This is obscene the person who did this has surely killed the baby. Return it at once. The mother chinchilla must be upset as heck.
To try to justify such animal cruelty (by the person who stole the baby) is insane.
and FYI chinchillas are not an exotic pet or hard to care for at all as other people have commented.

I was different then the other kids in school, that's why I have to make up for it by stealing exotic animals to show to my other hipster friends to show them how cool I am NOW!!

So what if the fucking thing dies, maybe it'll be cooler to show everyone a dead baby chinchilla!!

I just want to personally say thank you for putting this on your website. I am the friend of the person and we are very concerned about the safety of this defenseless animal. Everything deserves a chance to live. As for the comments about the Pet Shop, though I understand everyone has their own opinion, we care about our animals. If we didn't, we would not take this much time and effort to save this baby. Like a human child, this chinchilla needs its mother to survive. The person may not know how to take care of it correctly. So is it really better off than in a pet shop that will feed it and leave it with a mother that cares for it? Please, just if you know anything, help us.

Since you're a friend of the person who ripped off the baby chinchilla, have you thought of telling her to either pay for the chinchilla or return it to the pet shop where she got it from?

I believe she means she's the aforementioned friend in the news report. Her family owns the pet shop. She doesn't know the person who stole it, let alone is friends with them, or she'd obviously do something to get it back.

Anyways: Woo, Brittani! My little reporter! <3 :D

Yes that is what I meant. I am the aforementioned friend in the article. Thank you for the clarification. XD. I should have worded that better.
